A dryer vent inspection is simply the process of checking the vent for the possibility of damage or clogs. You can do it yourself or hire a pro. Pull the dryer away from the wall and inspect the portion of the vent that’s behind the appliance for lint buildup or kinks. You have two different types of air vents in your home: supply and return air vents. Your supply air vents are responsible for pushing air into your home. Meanwhile, return air vents draw warmer air back into the ductwork to condition it by removing the warm molecules from it. Both types of vents are necessary to a working HVAC system and a comfortable home.

There are a few things you can look out for that indicate it’s time to clean your dryer vent, including the following:

  • It has been a year or more since the last professional cleaning.

  • Your clothes are taking longer to dry than usual.

  • Your clothes smell musty or burnt when they come out of the dryer.

  • You see lint building up around the outside dryer vent cap.

  • Your laundry room is unusually hot.

  • Your dryer is unusually hot to the touch during operation.

  • You notice a kink in or damage to the vent.

Dryers pull in air from a circular opening in the back of the dryer. The dryer's heating element heats the air, and a blower fan circulates the hot air through the drum. The hot air travels outside the dryer through a vent or is cooled by a heat exchanger that condenses the steam into water and sends it down a drainpipe or to a containment compartment.
