"Discount Insulation quoted a fair price, showed up on time, and did an excellent job insulating the crawl space in our new home. I already feel a difference in how warm our home feels. Stu, the owner, is wonderful to work with and is an excellent resource for all things insulation and beyond. Highly recommend hiring them for any insulation projects in your home."
"More often than not, contractors are nightmares. By contrast, Foamco is a dream. Although they're based over 40 miles away, they came up promptly to view my attic and provide a quote to insulate it with open cell foam. The price was perfect. Any less and I would have been suspicious. Any more and I couldn't have afforded the work. In addition to the price, calculated before the principal left my driveway, they answered a variety fo technical questions about alternative approaches, clarified what condition I had to have the space in for the quote to apply, and assured me it would be a complete job. Three weeks later, they arrived as scheduled to an attic stripped of obstructions and old ceiling components. The crew of two proceeded to insulate the entire roof, which has tall peaks, two dormers, deep eaves, high gables, and two large semi-obstructed openings into an adjacent cold attic. By 3PM every surface exposed to the exterior was fully foamed and cut back to the rafter surface, ready for sheetrocking. They sealed the irregular openings into the annex with foamed cardboard panels (one of which is removable for access). It was an amazing one day transformation. I now have a warm, cozy, usable attic instead of a giant heat radiator. I'm pretty sure the job will pay back in about three years, without even accounting for the added usable space. I cannot recommend Foamco highly enough as a contractor that does what they promise and then some. I would absolutely not want to do that work and I admire the employees, Jay and Pablo, for their dedication under very unpleasant conditions. This is the second vendor I've chosen from Angie's List, and both experiences have been very gratifying. One warning, the scope of building codes have has now been extended into anything that affects the building envelope, so with the Foamco rig parked rather obviously in front of the house for less than 3 hours, I got an authoritative knock on the door from the town building inspector, flashing his badge and telling me I needed a permit for insulation. Fortunately, I was totally believable when i told him i had no inkling that such work needed a permit, so he let me pay for it without penalty. Beware the authorities. In my case, foam with a fire spread rating of 25 or less does not require sheetrock or other flame retardant covering. "
"The insulation crew was prompt, professional, and did a fantastic job installing my new insulation. I highly recommend this company for anyone in need of insulation services."
"Howard Falkow was incredibly helpful and responsive from the beginning. He walked us through the analysis of the energy leaks in the house and outlined several options to help us save on our energy bill. Rather than immediately pitch us on the most expensive option, he gave us an objective cost/benefit analysis as to which package would result in the best energy savings per cost. Howard was very responsive over email as well as on the phone and he and his staff were always friendly, professional, and very accomadating when it came to scheduling. Howard and NY Metro Insulation provide an excellent service for anyone who is looking to make their home more energy efficient. They are honest, professional, and perform high quality work (we noticed results immediately after the work was performed) and I would recommend them very highly to anyone in the area.
"We hired Energy Evolution in December of 2016 to complete a "Hot Roof" installation in our Bi-Level High Ranch in NY. The work was done in a professional manner and based on a separate third-party evaluation of the work it was above and beyond what was agreed to in the contract. What makes this "special" or different is that we had deck work completed in the Summer of 2018 which ruined the insulation in our attic. We contacted "Sam" and explained what happened and within 6 weeks he showed up at no charge to repair the damage created by the Deck Project. You really don't know how good the service is until something like this happens and it is worth noting that once you are his customer, he will take care of you. I have attached an image of the "before/after" which was filled in almost 2 years after the initial work was completed. Great Job!"
"We had been living in our house for 5 years and although the kitchen was a new addition, every winter my wife & I had noticed how noticeably the temperature differentiated especially after the winter of 2014/15. And because it was a dirt floor with some wood and old construction debris strewn about. I was not so keen on staying down there. In doing my own investigation there was some piping and insulation under floor. So when investigating estimates we called a number of "green" companies. Out of the three companies that came, only Frank Petrullo with Eco Green Solutions, noticed the mold and a water leak coming from fridge line. He took the time to show me where the water was coming, how mold had proliferated on the wood floor joists and beams. The dirt floor was somewhat moist and light was visible from outside along foundation rim contributing to the mold and moisture in crawl space. He explained each of our options and detailed the steps in sections of each estimate. We opted to have a plumber fix the water leak, then franks crew came in, cleaned up the mold, then layed down the crawl space membrane, finally insulating floor & rim joist. All in under two days. The crew showed up on time, left the open sections of the house clean, and we immediately noticed a difference in kitchen and rest of house. Walking around bare foot in kitchen is more comfortable, the kitchen is less noisy, and house humidity is maintained. "
"Joe did a great job on this, our dining room was a add on to connect the original home and the garage and had no insulation and boy in the winter it was unusable as well as the kitchen basically (the best part of the house). Joe came and drilled small holes in the attic floor that they sealed up later to allow for blowing in the insulation. And they cleaned up well. we have a 20 month old but there was nothing left over for the baby to put in her mouth. Joe is great! Our dining room is toasty and the kids can play in there year-round Plus they are were less than half of the expensive "efficiency" guys PSEG sent over. Those providers wanted to charge $10,000+ for basically the same job."

"They arrived on time. They offered assistance with moving the furniture out of their work area. The workers made sure to cover the floors and all the furniture before they began their work. The work was completed in two days as predicted. They forgot to include one of the entryways ceilings In the contract. I mentioned this to the worker and after a phone call to Ari they proceeded to do the work. Although I would have liked to see Ari at some point during the insulation process, I believe the work was done well. We will wait for this coming winter to give our final verdict. "
Cellulose insulation is usually made from recycled paper products, such as old newspapers, but cellulose might also contain recycled denim. While most homeowners traditionally buy cellulose insulation to use for installation, it is possible to make your own at home with old newspapers, cardboard, a paper shredder, and boric acid (important for fireproofing your cellulose insulation materials).
Unfaced wall insulation is easier to cut and install, making it the better choice for a DIY project. It’s also more affordable. But if it’s unfaced, you’ll likely need to add a vapor barrier to reach your desired R-value and efficiency, as it doesn’t offer any moisture barrier.
Faced insulation uses paper or foil to create a built-in barrier and doesn’t require an extra step. It’s also more fire-resistant and safe. But it’s quite a bit more expensive and a little bit harder to work with as a DIYer.
Insulation can be made of cellulose, fiberglass, polyurethane, polystyrene, or mineral wool. Radiant barriers are often made of aluminum or other similarly reflective materials, but they will need to be paired with something else because they don’t provide heating benefits. Cellulose is among the most eco-friendly options and may be recycled when it’s past its shelf-life, whereas polyurethane and polystyrene both emit harmful compounds and will need to be handled with care during installation.
Installing sheets of plywood over attic insulation is a popular choice, especially in storage spaces. That said, insulation works by trapping hot air—so it needs extra space to expand and be effective, or you might reduce the energy efficiency of your home.
It’s important that you never compress the insulation by installing flooring directly on top of it. In many houses, you’ll need to install a subfloor before putting plywood over insulation in your attic.
Yes, crawl space insulation is worth it if installed correctly. Installing insulation in your crawl space will improve the air quality, help stabilize your home's temperature, lower your energy bills, and prevent pests from entering your home. Though you’ll pay more to install insulation initially, the savings you get from installing insulation can help offset those initial costs over time.
