"J&J Paving Inc. did an excellent job & I am satisfied with the service received from Manuel & the rest of his crew. On September 29, they removed all the the old asphalt, did dig the ground and ran several trench PVC pipes & did dig one 5 ft drain holes connect four of the seven PVC pipes and another 3 ft hole to connect the other 3 PVC drain pipes. Lay down gravels with sand cement, gravel rock with cement, leveled the grounds & graded for rain water to run away from the house whenever it rains. Then Lay down the asphalt. We are very please with J&J's service. Customer service skills, courtesy and Manuel did take time to discuss the whole process & answered all questions. I selected J&J Paving because the proposal was very detailed & explained the steps about the project. The other contractors did not provide a good proposal and some of them took too long to provide a proposal. I already recommended J&J/Manny Paving to three of my neighbors."

I contacted Rich, who had been easy to work with in the initial installation process, and he said it was an installation error that they would come out and fix the next paving season. When I reached back out to Rich to schedule the fix he didn't return my calls, voicemails, or text messages. I wouldn't recommend Westchester Seal & Repair if you want a properly installed driveway that lasts."

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. Chip seal layers gravel and a liquid bitumen one at a time on-site, while asphalt directly pours a pre-combined mixture. Asphalt must be sealed, but it will last up to four times as long as chip seal driveways. Aesthetically, chip seal has a natural, rustic look compared to the traditional asphalt slab.

Driveways should be sloped with a minimum 2% slope—anything lower will cause precipitation and runoff to collect. A 2% slope is the equivalent of a 2-foot rise over 100 feet. One quick way to check the integrity of your driveway’s slope: no more than four inches of water should collect on the surface longer than 15 minutes after rain.

The cost to replace a driveway ranges from $8 to $15 per square foot, depending on factors that include material, size, and labor. If your driveway has deep cracks, potholes, or drainage issues (or if it’s simply past its prime), replacement might be the smarter investment over constant repairs. Resurfacing can be a cheaper alternative at $3 to $20 per square foot, but it won’t fix your driveway’s underlying problems.

You have a few options if you’re looking for the best material for a steep driveway. Gravel and crushed stone are affordable and provide good traction, while resin helps prevent puddles from forming and can be coated with an anti-slip finish.
