"The contractor rushed the job, did very little prep, and painted in eggshell instead of the requested matte finish. Walls had bumps, imperfections, and paint drips. Walter underbid other quotes, but now I understand it was because he cut corners and cheapened the quality. Walter left a spatula wedged high on the front door, which caused the door to tear and scrape the wall when closing. He told me earlier it ?will keep happening? and expected me to deal with it. Walter made excuses to fix the door and wall but never came back, so I had to hire someone else to repair the door. I have attached photos of the damage. I do not recommend this contractor. "

Ceiling-mounted curtains won’t damage the ceiling if they’re installed properly. Using the right anchors or securing the brackets into joists will ensure the curtain weight is properly supported and prevent damage. However, overtightening screws, using weak anchors, or repeatedly removing and reinstalling hardware in the same spot can cause cracking or sagging over time. It is possible to repair plaster yourself, but we don’t recommend it. Plaster repair is easy in theory but difficult in practice. Applying repair plaster is straightforward, but ensuring the area is prepped properly to receive the new plaster and ensuring that the finished product looks smooth and professional both demand experience. Plus, repairs are especially difficult if you have a textured ceiling or walls. Paying for professional plaster repair is worth the investment if you want your wall to look good as new.

Depending on how much adhesive was used as well as the strength of the adhesive, you may have some drywall damage when removing a mirror. You can typically repair most drywall damage if it’s small by sanding the damaged area, applying spackle to smooth the damaged section so it’s flush with the rest of the wall, and repainting the area.

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

Small hairline cracks in plaster walls are not serious and are mostly cosmetic, but larger or widespread cracks indicate structural problems that need repair. 

  • Cracks 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) or thinner: Cosmetic cracks you can repair if desired.

  • Cracks wider than 0.5 centimeters or widespread cracks: Structural repair is needed, either DIY or by a pro.

  • Cracks 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) or wider: Contact a plaster repair professional.

Watch for large, deep cracks, multiple cracks in the same area, and cracks along the walls where they meet the ceiling. Repair these cracks to prevent further damage.
