"I contacted Great Bear through Angie's List and they were very responsive. Calling them to set an appointment was a little bit more difficult - but maybe because I called early. I called again and got through and made an appointment. Due to a backup in appointments, they were unable to come the first time around, but said they would come the next morning. They came on time then and discounted the rate since they were unable to make it the previous day. I wasn't there in person, but my husband dealt with Mike the owner and said he was friendly, professional and put the dirt with grass back over the hole (which the previous septic company we dealt with had not even tried to fix). Will definitely hire again in the future."

"They called within minutes of my posting on Home Advisor. Sent someone that afternoon even though it was Saturday, gave a reasonable price and asked if I needed repair made immediately because he had an emergency to handle some miles away but would return in a few hours. Office called to say his emergency was taking longer than planned but he would return on Sunday. He did late Sunday morning and made repair."

"We had a clogged gray water line that was causing water to back up and come out of the floor drains in our basement and soak the floor. It was an older house and we weren’t sure how the drainage pipes were set up. Gualtieri first helped us troubleshoot the problem and recommended an expert snake/drain company to unclog and video the entire gray water drainage line. Really, really good idea and gave us a concrete map of what was underground. Among other things, it turned out there was also a rainwater leader feeding into the same washing machine drainage pipe as well as gray water from our a bathroom shower/tub and sink inside the house. Gualtieri helped us devise a plan to reroute the bathroom water in the basement (to our septic) as well as the rainwater leader outside (to a new dedicated rainwater pipe). Once we figured this all out and had the necessary plumbing done, Gualtieri installed a 660-gallon dry well. They did the dry well install in one, short day with just the two brother/owners, no other workmen. Jim ran the digger with expert care. He minimized disrupting shrubs, trees, ground cover, and moved one large bush and delicately worked around another. He patiently discussed with me the best plan for the dug-up dirt (which was the biggest technical challenge) and came up with a perfect solution which included moving a couple of large piles of sticks and dead branches. The work done was right alongside our driveway and they did not leave a single mark on the asphalt, nothing. They threw grass seed on the bare ground and two-weeks later it’s like they never were here. Jim and Dan are not only extremely competent at what they do, they are also honest, straight-forward, do not BS, and are genuinely nice guys. We feel lucky to have found them!"

Septic Tanks questions, answered by experts

Depending on the size and location of your septic tank repair job, you may want to let the septic pros finish before tackling other backyard work. However, in some cases, it’s not a bad idea to coordinate between your providers if the timing’s right and your septic repair pro says it’s safe to do so. For instance, if the septic repair work is happening in the fall, you might want to take advantage of the opportunity to prepare your backyard landscaping for winter , or in spring, start mulching the garden beds.

Signs that your well is dry include a decrease in water pressure, strange odors coming from faucets, cloudy, bubbly, or discolored water, and water that’s warmer than normal. Signs that your well pump is bad are similar, but you may also notice higher-than-average electric bills, strange clicking sounds, and faucets that spit or sputter.

All municipalities in the U.S. require a permit for septic tank installation or septic system alteration, and the permit will usually cost between $450 and $2,500. Some municipalities also require permits for septic system repair. You’ll either need to contact your local building department or your septic tank company to ask if this is necessary before carrying out the work. Permits are not typically required to have your septic tank pumped, so provided your septic company is licensed, you can move forward with the work as needed.

A septic tank lid is often 1 foot underground, but it could be just 4 inches from the surface or 4 feet deep. For septic tank lids that are closer to the surface, you’ll have an easier time locating them just by looking for signs in the yard or using a metal probe. But for septic tanks that are buried deeper underground, you’ll need to hire a pro with specialized equipment to track down the lid without risk of damaging utility lines.

The disadvantages of having a well include more maintenance, like annual testing and inspections, and high up-front costs to drill a well. Well water is also vulnerable to contamination, which is why keeping up with testing is important if you own a well. When it comes to well water versus city water, well water does offer more independence and is a reliable water source.
