"They performed appropriate tests on my softened and filtered water before doing any work. No major repairs were needed, only targeted maintenance was needed. They were thed only water filtration rane changes from this point forward. Finding these folks is loke hitting a home run.company that offered a service to deliver salt to us, carry the salt to our basement, then install the heavy salt into our salt bin. And their price for doing that is more than fair. We will be having them provide routine maintenance & filter/membrane replacement."

"Joe called me almost immediately. In fact, he was the only one that called me of all the contractors listed for my repair. He helped me to diagnose over the phone and wanted me to check something before I spent money to have a repair call. I checked it. He had diagnosed it correctly and I was able to fix it myself. He followed up with text messages to make sure everything was good with my softener. Joe helped me to save money on a simple salt bridge I had not uncovered yet at the very bottom of my brine tank. He was more concerned about me than collecting money for a service call. But more importantly he gained a customer for next time and in the future. His time and service was invaluable to me. I highly recommend this company!!! Thanks, Joe!!!"

"VERY PROFESSIONAL- John has been our go to plumbing guy for years now. He has replaced kitchen faucets, moved the toilet in our half bath, replaced outdoor water spigots, replaced tankless water system and more. He and his team are dependable, honest and quick to respond!! John explains / shows what the issue was and what to do to prevent from happening again. ASTAR's work was exemplary from soup to nuts!!!!  Their level of quality, professionalism, responsiveness, cleanliness, courtesy, and customer service was first-rate.

We are so grateful to ASTAR and to Aaron in particular, who went "above and beyond" from educating us and helping us choose a system, to overseeing its installation, and then to overseeing a subsequent tweaking of the system to meet our home heating needs.  Aaron and the whole team doing the work were professional, responsible, punctual, responsive, and ... what can I say, excellent in all regards.  We feel confident that ASTAR stands behind its work and we intend to continue to rely on ASTAR and Aaron to handle any and all future maintenance and upkeep of our heating system.

It should be noted that Aaron, our contact at ASTAR, is extremely knowledgeable and talented regarding his craft, and was always eager to share his knowledge.  He was always patient, taking the time to work with us through each stage of the process.  I want to add that Aaron is a very pleasant, warm, and honest individual who obviously puts a premium on customer service and customer satisfaction.  Suffice it to say, once again, that ASTAR was wonderful and that Aaron, in particular, has been there for us, "above and beyond."

We were so very impressed with ASTAR and with Aaron that we arranged to have them install an entirely new central air system as well!

My wife and I could not have asked for a better experience.  We would HIGHLY recommend ASTAR for your home heating needs.

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

The average cost to install a water softener, including the system and labor, is approximately $1,500. However, the total price can range widely from $600 to $6,000. For some complete systems, the cost may be between $800 and $2,500. Labor for the installation typically costs between $150 and $1,000.

The final price is influenced by several factors, including:

  • System type, capacity, and complexity

  • Home size and household water demands

  • Water hardness levels

  • Accessibility of the installation site and the extent of plumbing work required

  • Whether new electrical work is needed

  • The professional hired and any local permit costs

Hard water is not considered unhealthy and is safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in. It doesn't pose a risk to your physical health and can even help you get enough essential minerals like calcium in your diet. However, it can negatively affect skin and hair. Using hard water for washing can contribute to dry skin, an itchy scalp, and may worsen conditions like eczema by altering the pH balance. Additionally, some people do not like the taste of hard water.

If your water softener repair is fairly straightforward, like a simple filter replacement, then you can probably do it yourself with little risk. However, anything beyond a simple fix should be addressed by someone with extensive plumbing expertise to avoid costly water softener problems, like leaks.

That said, even simple problems can be complicated to diagnose, particularly if your water softener is attached to a whole-house treatment system. So, unless you feel absolutely certain that the problem is an easy fix that you can take on yourself, it's probably best to hire a plumber to diagnose and fix the problem.

It’s unlikely that hard water on its own could cause substantial hair loss or damage, though it’s true that bathing in hard water can cause your scalp to feel itchy or flaky and might dull your hair’s natural shine. Using high-quality shampoo and conditioner or buying a whole-home water softener can decrease these issues.
