"When I got into the tub for a shower Sunday afternoon, the drain was clogged. My plumber's helper didn't clear it. Called Bob at Herber; he said he'd call with an appointment Monday morning. Water went down some overnight, but was still sitting in the bottom of the tub. True to his word, Monday morning Bob called; he'd have someone here before 9. Mike arrived around 8:30. He couldn't snake it out from the tub as there are mechanical parts that open and close the drain in the way. Went down to the basement, disconnected the trap and elbow there; determined the clog was in the old (from 1953) galvanized drain pipe. When he snaked that out, the clog was at the T-junction with the vent pipe to the roof just where he suspected. I'd never had that snaked out, but that tub drain had always been slow; maybe that had accumulated from the original owners. Part of the threaded end of the old galvanized pipe cracked off (rusted) so Mike had to fabricate and replace the trap, elbow and connections to the tub drain. Once he was satisfied, he asked me to let the water run in the tub to make sure there were no leaks. Initial test was good, so "let it run for a full minute". Did that and still good. Have to say that tub drain is vastly different now. Previously if you turned on the tap full-force, the tub would fill up even when the drain was "open". Now it gurgles away happily and water does not accumulate. Glad I had that done."

"These guys were great!  We had an oil to gas conversion done in our house and the smell of the oil after the work was done would not go away, it was a nightmare.  My husband and I tried everything to get rid of the smell and clean up the mess the gas conversion guys left behind.  We ended up looking for professional help to get our basement back into shape and oil fumes out of the house before our baby arrived (any day now).  It took them less than a day to get rid of the smell completely.  They revamped our boiler room, cleaned out all the chimney soot that spread throughout our basement and boiler room.  I just can't express how much these guys saved us.  They cleaned our carpet on our stairs for extra measures and left an air purifier running in our house for over 3 days to make sure our air was clean for the baby.  They were so professional, helpful and courteous and my husband and I are so glad we found them.  We will definitely be using them for upcoming house projects in the near future!

Drain Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Yes, chemical drain cleaners contain sulfuric acid and hydrochloric acid, both of which are not only dangerous to your health but also extremely caustic. Drain cleaners will corrode your pipes and could lead to destroyed drain lines, especially if the chemicals interact with the piping for long periods. Unfortunately, this extended interaction is likely if you’re dealing with a clog, as the drain cleaner will have just as much trouble as water does moving through your plumbing system.

Some experts estimate that descaling your cast iron pipes can extend their lifetime by upwards of 50 years, although there’s not a lot of research to prove it. But we do know that without proper maintenance, cast iron pipes can quickly rust—leading to more expensive issues like burst pipes or main line clogs.

There are several common signs that your main sewer line may be clogged. Key indicators include multiple fixtures in your home draining slowly, gurgling sounds coming from drains or toilets, and water backing up into showers, sinks, or toilets. You might also notice water backing up from the plumbing system's drain cleanout, water in your basement drain, or unexplained wet patches on your lawn. Foul odors, such as the smell of raw sewage or rotten eggs, are another common symptom. The most reliable way to confirm a main sewer line clog is to hire a professional plumber to perform a camera inspection.

Main sewer lines can clog for several reasons. For example, if you regularly dump oil or grease down your drain, it could eventually block your line. Sometimes, tree roots can penetrate and grow inside old sewer pipes, creating a major blockage. Flushing bulky items (like paper towels, diapers, or baby wipes) can also clog your plumbing system.

A saturated leach field can result from various underlying issues, so it's best to call a professional septic company to diagnose and treat the problem. Depending on the cause of the saturation, potential fixes include pumping out a full septic tank, adding more bacteria to the tank, or regrading the soil to fix low spots. It may also be necessary to reroute rainwater and runoff away from the leach field using gutters, downspouts, and extenders. Once the primary issue is resolved, planting specific types of vegetation over the area can help absorb excess water. In more severe cases, you might need to install a larger septic tank or replace the leach field entirely.
