Onyx countertops have pros and cons. If you seal it properly and take care not to damage it, it can make a good countertop surface. However, it's more often used in bathrooms, where it’s less likely to sustain damage. It’s safer than using bleach on countertops, which can stain and cause discoloration. Be careful with rubbing alcohol when it comes to lacquered or varnished surfaces, though.

Every durable material has a few downsides, including quartz. First, it is heat resistant but not heatproof, meaning it can't withstand broiling hot pots and pans. The material can also discolor from long-term exposure to sunlight. Additionally, it is more expensive than many natural stone options and lacks the unique veining and patterns that come with materials like marble or granite.

You most likely purchased a quartz countertop because it won't stain or etch like marble. However, etching can still happen depending on the quality of the quartz and whether it is repeatedly cleaned with harsh chemicals or exposed to acidic spills. Remember, while quartz is more resistant than natural stone, just like Superman when faced with Kryptonite, it is not indestructible.
