Many cabinets use “J-pulls” or other handless designs. However, frequent use also gets these areas very dirty over time. A simple household cleaner and a soft washing cloth is usually enough to clean these areas when grime builds up. Adding a layer of lemon oil or beeswax can help prevent finishes from wearing off.

Using a shim or another type of self-leveling feet on the bottom edge of your cabinet bases will help to level them out if you’re installing them on a less-than-level surface. To make this process easier, you can add your shims before attaching the bases to your cabinets while they’re still light and easy to move around.

Overlay refers to the cabinet’s door style, while face frame refers to how the cabinet’s box is constructed. Overlay cabinets can either be full overlay—meaning the doors and drawers completely cover the fronts of the cabinets—or partial overlay, which means a portion of the face frame stays visible when the cabinets are shut. Partial overlay doors can only be used on face frame cabinets. Full overlay doors can be used on either face frame or frameless cabinets.

Hardwoods such as cherry, walnut, and maple are excellent options for building cabinet drawers. These are exceptionally durable woods that can withstand the wear and tear of daily use. Additionally, plywood is a common choice for drawer bottoms and sides as it is stable, cost-effective, and available in various thicknesses. Ultimately, the choice of wood depends on your preferences, budget, and the overall aesthetic you want for your cabinet drawers.
