"Don is a phenomenal professional. I understand little to none about plumbing and he easily explained what needed to be fixed. He s a genius at this. We were under a super tight timeframe and not only did he accomplish it well within that, it was done perfectly. I was lucky to find him when I needed a new boiler and both jobs were fairly quoted, unbelievably executed and added significant value to my home. If you fix problems the right way when things break in your home (and they will) you will get that money back when you sell it. Count on it. If you have a problem, don t wait. Call Don. You will be so happy you did."

"I hired Kenyon AP to do an install of a high efficiency wood furnace in parallel to my existing LP unit. Eric did the full install, including fabricating a custom plenum to mate it to my existing ducting. He came back to revise some of the work at no charge, and did a very thorough job. He was quick, responsive, professional, and accommodating. He's also a wizard with sheet metal, and a great guy to just talk to. Very personable. He takes his work seriously, he's honest, and he will see the job through until the work meets his standards. Eric shows a commitment to quality work that is honestly pretty rare in contractors, in my experience. I plan to hire him again for any HVAC needs!"

Install Boiler questions, answered by experts

You can use a boiler and a furnace, although it’s not common to use both for whole-house heating. For example, your furnace may take care of HVAC heating through your vents, while a boiler powers your floor-based radiant heating in the bathrooms. Mixing and matching like this gives homeowners a variety of heating possibilities.

Always consult your manual for specific pressure numbers. Many expansion tanks come pre-pressurized at a specific PSI range, anywhere from 12 to 40 PSI, designed for a range of home boilers. You should not have to pressurize an expansion tank yourself, only the boiler system. If your system has a tank that needs to be manually pressurized, this is generally a job for professionals and their tools.

When winter rolls around, and you turn the heat on for the first time in a year, it’s normal to sense a light odor. This could smell a little like burning because some dust has gathered in the heating unit over the warm months and will fade away shortly after. However, there are some smells you should watch out for and take caution around: an egg-like sulfur smell or an electrical burn odor would indicate there’s something wrong. Turn it off and call a professional for maintenance as soon as possible.

The average lifespan of a boiler is typically between 15 and 20 years, though some may last for as little as 10 years while others can reach 30. A boiler's longevity is influenced by several factors, including the quality of the unit, proper installation, and consistent professional maintenance.

The material also plays a significant role. Older boilers made from durable cast iron can last for over 20 years, with some functioning for up to 50 years. However, it's important to consider their lower efficiency, which can lead to higher utility bills. Modern boilers, often made from steel alloys, are designed to withstand high pressure and temperatures and have an average lifespan of about 20 years.

To maximize your boiler's lifespan, ensure it is installed correctly, have it professionally maintained each year, and address any necessary repairs immediately.

If you have a closed-system boiler that requires an expansion tank, you cannot safely operate it without one, as this risks extensive damage or even explosions. You must find a way to make room for the installation. Options include repositioning the boiler, rerouting the boiler piping to a more open area, or performing minor remodeling to create the necessary space. If you are unsure whether your boiler needs an expansion tank or how to best accommodate one, it's recommended to have a local heating service professional assess the situation. They can confirm the requirement and suggest the most practical solution.
