"John and his team were great. They were punctual and professional. They assessed our situation with the knob-and-tube wiring, and scheduled a date to come back and correct it - as it was a much bigger problem than we originally thought. John showed me everything in the panels, how things were wired, where the problems were. So I didn't feel like he was trying to get more out of me by saying it was a bigger problem. It really was a big problem. I saw it with my own eyes.
His team did very tidy work, were very friendly and respectful. They did some creative problem solving to make sure we got the most for our money - and the least invasive to our walls.
I'm back on Angie's List today to hire them a third time. We're adding some new outlets and changing some light fixtures. I would recommend them to anyone!

"Mike from Shamrock electric to the rescue again. We had a spotlight bulb that needed replacing in the back of our house . Also a bathroom fan and new high hat light over the shower. That bathroom is for my daughters who as they got older take longer showers. So the fan that’s put in by Mike will help a lot too keep the condensation lines from forming on the walls. It was also definitely a little dark in that bathroom even with a 4 bulb fixture. Our problem is the whole ceiling is cathedral, so the light gets lost going up. Mike’s thought it would be a be a good idea to add a high hat light fixture over the shower area. WOW what a difference, they ( my girls) are so happy. There were also two lights switches that need replacing in my basement, Mike switched them out and they work perfect. I could not stress to you enough how much I appreciate the work Mike from Shamrock does for us. We never had an Electrician , and now I don’t know what I’d do without him.His work is great, a true professional , and a really good guy. I’m probably one of the few people who can’t wait to see his electrician. He has become a friend and part of my house"

"Owner came out for the estimate, he was helpful and informative. Installation went smooth, they were done within one day and answered all my questions. Price was middle of the road, not the highest but not the cheapest."

"Matt did two jobs for me, an outdoor lighting job and an inside job where I needed an extra switch installed on a bathroom fixture. Both times he arrived when he said he would and went right to work. Both jobs took less time than I thought they would and best of all Matt's prices are very reasonable. I am so glad I have found Matt Greco Electrical. He is reliable and reasonable and you can rest assured Matt will take care of any electrical issue you have."

"Very good experience. We needed a 200’ length of buried conduit installed between our breaker panel in the garage and a motorized front gate on the driveway. The electricians arrived on schedule, did a neat, professional job and left the work area spotless - no packaging or offcuts were left behind. Very happy with the result. Recommended."

"I recently hired Sal at Hilite to ground a large number of the outlets in my home, add new outlets and new light fixtures, and I am thoroughly impressed with the outstanding service provided and overall expertise of Sal and his team. The team completed the work on schedule and demonstrated exceptional problem-solving skills, efficiently addressing unexpected issues as they arose throughout the process. Sal got the job done for a very reasonable price. Throughout the process, the Hilite team maintained clear communication, exhibited professionalism, and kept on track to get the job done within the agreed upon timeline. I highly recommend Sal and his team for any electrical work. I would certainly look forward to hiring them again for future projects."

"I cannot say enough good things about Dan Bolger and Island Homecraft. Dan is a fantastic project manager who brought in a great team of talented professionals. Everyone came on time and did a wonderful job, quickly, and each was pleasant, patient, and great to work with. Everyone cleaned up at the end of each day and did their best to minimize the inconvenience to our daughter. My husband and I were traveling from New Jersey to help our daughter. Dan did an amazing job in scheduling the crew and subcontractors to make it easy for us to manage our travel and to minimize the time that our daughter was unable to use her space. (I should note that we helped by having all decisions made and all materials ready – this is very important, we know.) The project required a new glass slider, which Kevin and Steve managed to fit into a very tight rough opening (another contractor had been gun-shy to attempt this). It also involved tile work, plumbing, electrical work, and installation of a large amount of cabinets, as well as all new appliances. The cabinets required finished tops since these are visible from the stairs. Kevin completed these beautifully, along with the crown moldings, baseboard trim, and special raised panels on the peninsula. Dan recommended finished under surfaces for the cabinets with LED light strips. These provided a beautiful, sleek look, and we were glad we took his advice. This was not our first rodeo, so with such a big project, we expected a few glitches. Dan and his people took these in their stride and quickly figured out the work arounds, even when it meant extra time and work for them. For instance, when the bookcase above one base cabinet turned out to be too short to quite reach the granite counter, Larry used scraps of trim left from other parts of the kitchen to craft a bottom molding that covers the gap and makes the bookcase look like a piece of fine furniture. Dan also recommended Gary Epstein and his business, 1-800-Paint-Job of Long Island, to paint the rooms when the construction was completed. Gary and his crew did a wonderful job, and we are grateful for the recommendation. Please see my separate review of Gary’s business for details and photos. We have worked with a number of contractors over the years, and Dan is up there in lights. Our daughter’s friend said the pictures do not do justice, and she is right. Many thanks to Dan’s crew, Kevin, Steve, and Larry, for the fine work they did and their courteous, considerate attitude. We look forward to working with Island Homecraft for the additional remodeling still needed at this home. We also want to thank Dan’s subcontractors for their outstanding work: • Gabco Demo arrived early the first morning and had the kitchen stripped in a couple of hours. They moved the old fridge to the living room for temporary use, were careful moving discards and debris out through the living room, and were able to get all the old linoleum tile up from the floor, even the parts stuck on especially tight. They took everything away. • Two Brothers Ceramic Tile arrived very early each day, completed their work super fast with no mistakes, and did not waste one single piece of tile. For the kitchen backsplash, they were able to stretch the marble pencil moldings to substitute for the too-thin edge pieces we’d bought, saving time and money. The tile floors are perfectly level. • Rob Beck of Biagio Plumbing lives locally and was wonderfully available and responsive. He had our daughter’s gas stove and her fridge hooked up and ready to use less than two weeks after demo began so that she could cook while she waited for her counters and other finishes. He also came back to reverse her new front load washer and dryer when we realized the doors banged into each other. Please see my separate review of Biaggio Plumbing. • Shamus, George, and their apprentice, Frank, from Sure Line Electric did a super job installing under cabinet LEDs, relocating switches, outlets, and a security sensor, replacing the porch light and a ceiling light, installing a new larger electrical box and electric for the pump for the new basement slop sink, and trouble-shooting and activating several outlets that didn’t work since the home was built. George saved a good deal of money by assuring us that the electrical panel did not require upgrading to 200 amps (as another contractor had said). He advised us instead to install a larger panel box with more outlets, eliminating the existing crowding and allowing space for the slop sink pump."

Chandelier Installation questions, answered by experts

It’s usually safe to use old lamps, but you should check the components first for signs of damage, including fraying wires, damaged wire insulation, and loose wire connections.

If you're unsure of a lamp’s age or have an antique lamp, it’s a good idea to have a lamp repair technician rewire it. This investment will ensure the electrical components are safe to use, reducing the risk of an electrical emergency.

For every foot of ceiling height, your chandelier should have two to three inches of height. To calculate the width of the ideal chandelier, determine the width and length of the room.

Add these two numbers together and that is the number of inches wide your chandelier should be. For example, if your room is 15 feet wide and 15 feet tall, you will need a chandelier that is 30 inches wide.

It’s technically possible to install your own outdoor lighting, but we only recommend it for wireless set-ups, which won’t last as long as wired outdoor lights. Installing wired lighting around your property requires help from a professional electrician, especially since improper installation can increase the risk of fire. You may need a licensed professional to pull an electrical permit for you and sign off on the work. We suggest leaving the work to an expert to ensure good design, maximum security for your home, and the best quality work possible that will last for decades.

Incandescent lights are glass bulbs with metallic filaments inside, while LEDs feature “light emitting diodes” that illuminate when they come in contact with an electrical current. You can buy either for your Christmas lights, but note that LED lights are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan.

It’s not illegal to fly an American flag at night without a light shining on it, but the U.S. Flag Code notes that it’s respectful to provide illumination. Installing a flagpole light is also common practice and will add more to your home’s curb appeal at night. Choosing a solar-powered or battery-powered light for your flag is an affordable way to provide illumination.
