"My wife and I just purchased our first home. We knew before we closed that the water heater seen better days and the previous owner put it in a really tight spot, also backwards. After taking two showers, the water heater set off our carbon monoxide detector, having two kids this worried us a bunch. Halter Plumbing & Heating came out at 8:00 pm to help us, got it all figured out, and stuck around for a while to make sure it would be safe for us. Upon fixing it, I decided to go with a new one, like I said in the beginning, the water heater was in a tough spot, a lot of bad pipes, and backwards. He came in with the best price regardless of all the extra things he would have to do to get it in there. Besides that his price was definitely worth it, his willingness to take on the challenge of a backwards, crammed between a wall, and a fernes"

"Installed on time but with a gas leak. Gas supplier disconnected the unit. I could not get company service for 3 days. Tankless water heater is operating well after gas line repairs. Product is great but installation was shoddy."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Electric water heaters do not need an attached vent, but the location of the water heater should allow for roughly 12 inches of clearance around it. This allows cool air to flow around the appliance and allows repair technicians to work on its components safely. The exact amount of clearance space required depends on your local building codes.

Yes, you can convert a gas water heater to an electric one, but it is a complex process. You will need to ensure there is adequate power for the new electric unit, as they require more power than gas models. The project also involves safely closing off the gas lines and ventilation, and some cities may require a permit for the conversion. The cost can range from $1,500 to $4,100, depending on the installation scope, plumbing and electrical work, and the water heater model. For an accurate quote, it's best to contact a local professional. Also, be aware that your monthly utility bills may increase after the conversion, as natural gas is typically cheaper than electricity.

Most standard residential water heaters, which are typically around 40 gallons and use 240 volts and between 3,500 and 5,500 watts, require a 30-amp, two-pole circuit breaker. For smaller, point-of-use water heaters using 120 volts and between 1,500 and 3,000 watts, a 30-amp breaker is also often adequate. However, some models may have different needs; units that use more watts than average may require a 40-amp breaker, while smaller units might only need a 20-amp breaker. Newer, tankless, or more energy-efficient models can also require a higher amperage. Having the correct breaker size is crucial for safe and efficient operation, so it's best to consult a licensed electrician to determine the specific needs of your water heater.

When replacing an old unit, you might want to switch from a gas water heater to an electric water heater or vice versa. To do this, you will likely need to add infrastructure to the area. For example, you likely don’t have a gas line that served your old electric water heater. You’d have to call a plumber to put in a new gas line. If you’re replacing a gas unit with an electric one, the plumber will need to safely cap the old gas line. You will then need an electrician to add wiring for the new electric unit.

Depending on the brand of water heater, you may need to install an expansion tank in order to meet the conditions for warranty coverage. It’s important for consumers to read the fine print of the warranty to see if an expansion tank is necessary. Even if an expansion tank isn’t required for the warranty, it’s usually mandated by building codes—although not for tankless water heaters.
