"I had an Absolutely Fantastic Experience!! My husband & I were so lucky to have gotten Jason Scharf to come out to our home, he was very insightful, helpful, courteous and very professional. Jason explained step-by-step what he was doing along the way & what would work best within our home with 4 different price ranges that would work for us. Jason was very informative. He mentioned and advised me on some items that would require attention on a monthly basis which I was grateful for. Upon completion, he reviewed the bill and explained any questions that I had. I was very pleased. Overall, Jason’s work was outstanding. I would recommend Jason from Astar to anyone I know that is in need of a central air system in their home. "R-Factor Insulation Company does very good work. They insulated my crawl space and did a wonderful job. The owner Mr. Knapp was very professional and came out and gave a free estimate on the work. The job estimate was right on the price with no cost over runs at the completion of the

Ideally, you can add new insulation to your existing insulation. However, some circumstances require you to remove old insulation before adding any new insulation: 

  • If the insulation is over 15 years old

  • If the insulation is wet or moldy

  • If it is vermiculite insulation

  • If you see signs of pest infestation

Removing old insulation is best left to a pro who can safely dispose of potential moldy or asbestos-ridden insulation.

Garage door insulation can last anywhere from 20 to 100 years depending on the type of insulation. Cellulose has the shortest lifespan coming in at between 20 and 30 years, while spray foam, mineral wool, and fiberglass can last between 80 and 100 years with proper maintenance. 

Humidity plays a role in how long more susceptible insulation materials—like fiberglass—last. Once fiberglass batts reach the 15-year mark, you'll need to routinely inspect your insulation to ensure that it is in mint order.

You do not always need to remove old insulation before adding new. If the existing insulation is in good condition—not wet, physically damaged, moldy, or infested with pests—you can add new insulation directly on top of it for a compounding effect. You can also mix different types, such as adding blown-in insulation around existing fiberglass batts.

However, removal is recommended if the old insulation is compromised by water damage or pests. You should also remove it if you plan to install a different type of insulation, like switching from roll or batt insulation to spray foam. If the existing insulation is very old or damaged, you will likely get more benefit from removing it and starting fresh.

Spray foam insulation doesn’t do well around heat sources. Therefore, You can use spray foam insulation to seal around HVAC boots that penetrate through the drywalls or around where wrapped ducts connect to the boots, but we don’t recommend using spray foam insulation to encapsulate your air ducts. Spray foam insulation on air ducts is also less effective compared to duct wraps.

Traditional clapboard siding, particularly with panels made from wood, is not a significant insulator on its own. However, you can keep your home cooler in summer and warmer with "insulated clapboard siding," which is a type of vinyl clapboard siding with a built-in foam insulation. Consult a local siding contractor to determine whether insulated siding is right for your home.
