True Building Performance is the Capital District’s top rated insulation contractor. It’s no secret that the combination of our older houses along with cold winters and humid summers, can be a recipe for high bills and uncomfortable homes. Our staff has years of experience identifying solutions and best practices for improving efficiency, safety, and comfort. Let us provide an honest evaluation and help in creating a customized plan for your home.

"The job went great. It took two days; the first to remove and dispose of old fiberglass batts and debris and the second to do the attic work. This included: air sealing the attic, fire protection for all recessed lighting in ceiling, fire rated barrier around chimney, constructing and insulating a new hatch for access to attic, creating proper ventilation from soffits (which had been an ongoing problem) and blowing in approximately 18 inches of new cellulose insulation. The workers (four men) arrived on time, worked extremely well as a team and where very meticulous in their clean-up. I was very impressed by their professionalism and experience in completing the job."

I've worked as a carpenter's apprentice for the last two years developing my skill and equipment set. I have experience with handy-man work (changing light fixtures, faucets, doors, doorhandles/deadbolts), furniture assembly, and painting/staining. I have worked professionally installing chain-link and wooden fencing for agricultural, municipal, and residential applications.

We are a woman owned & operated, full service insulation company. We specialize in fiberglass batt insulation, blown-cellulose & fiberglass insulation, and spray foam. We staff a crew of expert installers, and pride ourselves on exceptional customer service.

"From the very first interaction on the phone, owner Jessica Ryan was very friendly and knowledgable. Upon inspection of the attic she was very thorough and honest in her analysis. She wound up saving me many thousands of dollars with her suggestions compared to what the other companies quoted me as they tried to up-sell unnecessary services. On the day of the insulation being installed her crew was promptly on time, extremely good natured and well informed. The whole experience was perfect. I would absolutely hire them again and would strongly recommend that you do too!"

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Unfaced wall insulation is easier to cut and install, making it the better choice for a DIY project. It’s also more affordable. But if it’s unfaced, you’ll likely need to add a vapor barrier to reach your desired R-value and efficiency, as it doesn’t offer any moisture barrier.

Faced insulation uses paper or foil to create a built-in barrier and doesn’t require an extra step. It’s also more fire-resistant and safe. But it’s quite a bit more expensive and a little bit harder to work with as a DIYer.

Water freezes at 32 degrees Fahrenheit, but the actual temperature that can cause frozen pipes can vary. Generally, it takes 12 hours for pipes to freeze at 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Uninsulated pipes can freeze if it’s 20 degrees Fahrenheit or colder for over three hours. If your pipes are insulated, it can take six hours or longer for pipes to freeze. Note that some pipe types freeze more often than PEX pipes. Copper pipes freeze more often because the copper conducts energy and loses heat quickly.

Minimal maintenance is required, though regular inspections to ensure insulation hasn't shifted or deteriorated can improve performance over time.

Insulation can be made of cellulose, fiberglass, polyurethane, polystyrene, or mineral wool. Radiant barriers are often made of aluminum or other similarly reflective materials, but they will need to be paired with something else because they don’t provide heating benefits. Cellulose is among the most eco-friendly options and may be recycled when it’s past its shelf-life, whereas polyurethane and polystyrene both emit harmful compounds and will need to be handled with care during installation.

Yes! Outdoor faucet covers work by enclosing the faucet with a thick, insulating material that will keep the faucet warmer than outdoor temperatures. They need to be sealed tightly against the house to work properly, though, so be sure to tighten the rubber strap or drawstring on the insulation cover to best protect your faucets.
