"From start to finish, working with Andy and his team was an absolute pleasure. I am not kidding when I say that I had asked at least 20 people in NYC if they would recommend their contractor and they ALL said no. Well, I would 100% recommend Andy and Arta Construction. Andy was on time for our appointment, he helped me figure out how I could get everything done in my budget (he told me to get the materials myself and he was right, that was the way to save some money; but, when I needed him to get something it was also totally fine), and he finished on time. In the kitchen, he removed the cabinets, the floor, the countertop, and the backsplash; and then he built up the subfloor, installed IKEA cabinets that we assembled, installed our new floor, countertop, backsplash, sink, faucet, light fixture, and installed all of our appliances. Nothing was a problem for him. His work is detailed and his team cleans up every day. In the bathroom he removed all the mud set tile, floor, and bathtub. The work in there again was superb. You won't believe me when I tell you that all of that only took a little over two weeks. And that is because of some building issues on our end. Without that, it would have taken just under two weeks. He made us feel like we were in good hands and like he was just as invested in our project as we were, even though I'm sure that we were a small fish. He never made us feel like that. If you want work done that is reasonably priced, done on time, neat and tidy, and detailed, work with Andy."

"We are very happy with our renovation. Results were beautiful. They stayed within price and time estimate, but most importantly Dave is an honest decent person who’s very communicative. There will always be hiccups and we expected some. The Waxtel group was able to work with us to create a great bathroom. Tiling was top notch."

"Great company to work with. Their sub-contractors (e.g., plumber, electrician, tile installers, shower door craftspeople, etc.) were excellent. They worked well with our designer and with suppliers of materials. They followed plans. Minor and typical hiccups handled professionally and expeditiously. Scott and Paul are easy to work with. They are respectful and listen well. Good communicators. Protected the areas of the house they were not working in. They were able to work with higher end materials. Have recommended to others."

Small jobs welcome

"I was very pleased and satisfied with the work that Loja Renovation provided. They replaced and installed a medicine cabinet by removing old tiles and replaced with new tiles to accommodate the new one. Patched a wall where a bathroom cabinet was removed. And replaced a tub spout with a new one. I would hire the again and recommend them to others."

"We hired David to gut renovate our bathroom. He was EXCELLENT! Note, we live in an old house and working in these spaces is often complicated and requires lots of attention to detail. Highlights: *He and his crew were always on time in the mornings and pushing the project forward *His team was ULTRA clean, it was a full renovation that normally generates lots of mess & dust and we hardly even noticed the mess as the space was always orderly at the end of the day (we've had chaotic renovations before and this was worlds better, project was next to our kitchen and we were able to use it with no problems) *We had multiple changes of scope and David was always knowledgeable and gave us advice about how to modify the project in a stylish, cost-effective way. *He has lots of trustworthy industry contacts such as for quality glass showers, tile purveyors and plumbers *His craftsmanship is HIGH quality and he devotes lots of time an effort into crafting a product that his clients like. He was meticulous about asking us for grout color, tile pattern and spacing (we chose herringbone), shower ledge measurements, custom shelving and all finishings. *We appreciated that the crew covered the floors on a daily basis and were careful not to damage the house as we are preserving its historical character * David is incredibly trustworthy and we would hire him again! Feel free to connect with us as a reference."

"The kitchen renovation, from start to finish, went smoothly and resulted in a kitchen more magnificent than we had envisioned. Working with the designer & cabinet craftsman was wonderful; their vast experience, portfolio of work to show for examples, & wide variety of backsplashes, materials & styles, allowed us to really hone the plan. Anthony's superintendant and crew were terrific: congenial, professional, on-time, making excellent use of their days, and were champs even when dealing with our incredibly difficult coop's superintendant and management board. We're left with a kitchen that has revitalized the entire feel of our NYC apartment and gladly give glowing reviews & appreciation for Anthony & his team."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

No, you don’t technically need a cement backer board for a wall tiling project, but not using it risks disastrous moisture damage. Cement is naturally water-resistant, whereas drywall soaks it in, which can lead to warping or mold growth. Always use a backer board treated with a waterproof membrane for bathrooms and other chronically damp areas to ensure complete tile shower waterproofing.

If you’re looking for a durable tile for a shower floor, consider porcelain, stone, or vinyl tiles. Each of these options, when installed correctly, will stand up well to everything from water and moisture to the impact from a dropped bottle of body wash. These materials are also easy to clean and maintain, making them popular options for shower floors.

The process takes two to four days, depending on the size of the area and your experience level. The first day involves assessing and prepping the existing tile, while the second day is for laying the new tile. This may take longer in complex areas. After letting the adhesive dry for 24 hours, grouting and sealing can be completed on day three. For larger projects or intricate tile patterns, expect the timeline to stretch a bit longer. Also, proper drying time between steps is essential for long-lasting results, which extends the project’s time.

No, when done correctly, removing the tile shouldn’t damage the subfloor. However, if there was pre-existing damage to the subfloor from standard use or lack of maintenance, the subfloor may need repairs. For example, if the contractors notice mold growth on the subfloor or an uneven surface, you may need more extensive services before installing new tile.

If you DIY tile removal, remove the tiles one step at a time, individually removing the tile, grout, and mortar to prevent unnecessarily damaging the subfloor. Depending on the age of your home, consider having a professional inspect the subfloor to ensure it’s in good enough condition to lay new tile.

Installations typically take 1-3 days, depending on area size; repairs are usually completed sooner if the issue is localized.
