Small jobs welcome

"Aaron and crew (another gent) were on time and cordial and got to work right away. They were to clean the deck and paint the deck stairs on the following day. The job was only about an hour and a half and it looked like a completely different deck. There were some rust stains that couldn't be lifted but I expected that. They were back the next day to stain the stairs and overall I ended up very happy with the work and with the company. I would hire them again definitely."

"I’m very happy with the work done by Dan from Westside Home Improvement. He was very professional and super knowledgeable about everything from the beginning to the end of the project; he was consistently communicative; and he gave me a fair price for the quality and quantity of work that he did. Now my deck looks nearly like new! I would definitely recommend Westside Home Improvement to anyone looking to get home repairs done!"

"You name it, he nailed it. Prompt, reliable, easy to work with, clear with his explanations, excellent work on the project, (power clean on a deck that badly needed it.). Very reasonable pricing. Less than I expected and we received superior work and customer service, I very highly recommend Pro-Tech Exteriors."

"Mike scraped, cleaned and painted our deck last July on one of the hottest days of the year. He showed up on time and worked throughout the day. When he ran out of paint (our fault, not his) he gladly went for more. He removed all furniture and then put back in place. The paint job itself was beautiful and I would definitely use again and recommend to anyone in need of his service."

"Trevor Brown was great at removing a hefty snow pack from my roof. He was able to get the job done within a day of my speaking with him. Very thorough and careful, checking in with me during the project to make sure any concerns were addressed. He did exactly what I needed, and cleaned up afterwards. Reasonable pricing, honest and diligent. I highly recommend Precision Renovations."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

To flatten a cupped deck board, start by ensuring it’s dry. Then, try flipping the board over so the cupped side faces down and reattach it. If that’s not possible, you can use screws to pull it tighter to the joists or plane the edges slightly to reduce the cup. It’s best to replace severely cupped boards.

Both composite and PVC decking are excellent alternatives to wood. However, while composite is moderately priced and lasts around 30 years, PVC costs more and lasts longer. PVC is also more durable, though both materials are more durable than wood decking. Ultimately, the choice between composite and PVC decking will come down to your budget and preferences.

The best time to paint your deck is when temperatures are neither too cold (below 60 degrees) nor too hot (above 85 degrees). Always paint your deck when there’s no risk of rain. For fast-drying paint like acrylic or latex, ensure your deck can dry for at least four hours. Oil-based paints take longer to dry and may require 48 hours to completely cure.

The best direction for a gate to swing depends on its location and purpose, but swinging inward is the general rule. An inward swing is often considered safer, prevents the gate from opening into public spaces like a sidewalk, and may be required by local building codes.

There are exceptions and specific considerations. If your property is on a slope, an inward swing might not be possible. For a deck gate, it's safest to have it swing away from any steps. In a backyard, the direction can be a matter of preference, though an inward swing can be helpful when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

Regardless of direction, ensure the gate can open fully without hitting any objects or blocking spaces. While an inward swing is standard, a gate that can swing both in and out offers the most flexibility if your setup allows for it.

Yes, and in some cases, frozen ground may improve the digging process for footings due to sturdier conditions. It’s easier than working in muddy conditions, which are more common in the spring. Contractors may use machinery that makes this step a breeze, so harder ground shouldn’t affect the building process.
