"Trevor Brown was great at removing a hefty snow pack from my roof. He was able to get the job done within a day of my speaking with him. Very thorough and careful, checking in with me during the project to make sure any concerns were addressed. He did exactly what I needed, and cleaned up afterwards. Reasonable pricing, honest and diligent. I highly recommend Precision Renovations."

"I have a large motorcycle on a specialized dolly with a bed that has less than 1 millimeter of clearance, so it won't roll unless the surface is very smooth. They moved items that were too heavy for me, cleaned, power-washed the floor and applied concrete patch.  The next day they sanded it down with a hand sander (allows greater detail than a floor sander I'm told).  Floor was then blown clean and epoxy spread.  Dolly rolls nicely!

"The prompt efficiency I received on this job was downright impressive. From quickly returning my call, to coming out and doing an evaluation, and then getting the project started-communication was amazing. Not only was he respectful and professional, his knowledge was impressive, and allowed me to trust at this project was going to be done correctly. He actively listened to what my concerns were and gave me a full breakdown of the type of cleaners and sealants appropriate for the job and what the benefits of each were. I appreciated that he truly took the time to clean and tidy up after the job was done, leaving this deck and the surrounding area looking amazing, and I’m looking forward to using it for many years to come. I will definitely be recommending him to friends and family for any home improvement needs."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

Most building codes require that railing spindles (also known as balusters) on decks or stairs be spaced no more than four inches apart. This safety standard is often called the '4-inch sphere rule,' which means a sphere with a 4-inch diameter should not be able to pass through the opening between balusters. This rule is in place to prevent small children and pets from slipping through the railing. For the same reason, the space between the bottom rail and the deck or floor surface should also be no more than four inches. As a general guideline, professionals often install three balusters per foot of railing. However, since specific requirements can vary by location, it is essential to check your local building codes to ensure compliance before starting your project.

No. In most cases, it’s not colder or freezing temperatures that affect decking materials but the amount of moisture that seeps into the materials as a result. For example, wood decking material is more likely to suffer from rot or decay when exposed to excess moisture from snow or ice. An extreme change in temperature can cause wood to expand or contract, but only if it’s not properly treated beforehand.

Always sand a deck before repainting so the wood is smooth and ready for paint. While you do not need to fully remove paint before repainting, sanding helps remove any areas with weather and sun damage. Sanding also helps remove chipped or flaking paint and opens the wood pores to improve paint adhesion.

Deck boards should be spaced no more than three-eighths of an inch apart. This is enough space to allow water and small debris to pass through without collecting on the surface, but not enough to create a tripping hazard. Certain materials, like pressure-treated wood, shrink over time, so they may need less space at installation.

When deciding if you should use 2x6 or 2x8 deck joists, consider the size of the deck, joist spacing, and materials. Larger decks, larger-spaced joists, and weaker wood all require more support, meaning they need larger joists. For example, 2x8 redwood joists spaced 16 inches apart can only safely span up to 10 feet and 7 inches. On the other hand, 2x10 southern pine joists spaced 12 inches apart can be as big as 16 feet and 2 inches. If you aren’t sure what size joist is best for your project, speak with your deck builder.
