Small jobs welcome

"Aaron and crew (another gent) were on time and cordial and got to work right away. They were to clean the deck and paint the deck stairs on the following day. The job was only about an hour and a half and it looked like a completely different deck. There were some rust stains that couldn't be lifted but I expected that. They were back the next day to stain the stairs and overall I ended up very happy with the work and with the company. I would hire them again definitely."

"I’ve never seen such attention to detail on a job. Clayton didn’t just stain my deck. He sanded it, pounded in loose nails, got a high quality product to protect it, and then applied it by hand with a brush!"

"They were great. They cleaned the area exceptionally well when they were finished. I had a 2 roof tear off and replace. I was very satisfied with their work. The owner is very knowledgeable and helpful. The price was good and he beat the competition. I had 4 quotes for the job."

Deck Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The proper height for a stair riser or deck step is between four and seven inches, with seven inches often considered the most comfortable. Building your stairs to this height ensures a strain-free step position and minimizes the risk of trip and fall injuries. For optimal safety and comfort, especially on deck stairs, a rise of around seven inches should be paired with a tread depth (or run) of at least 10 to 12 inches. While it is possible to design stairs with risers up to 12 inches, this height can be challenging for children, pets, or individuals with mobility issues. Always check with your local building codes, as they may mandate specific dimensions that differ from these general recommendations.

What goes under your floating deck depends on your preferences. Some homeowners put landscaping fabric underneath their decks to prevent weeds from popping up through the boards. Others choose to build a floating deck over grass or gravel. However, it’s best not to set your deck directly on the ground. Instead, set your deck on blocks to keep it elevated enough to prevent moisture from rotting the wood.

It’s best to use two screws to secure deck boards into every joist. Securing the boards to every joist makes the deck more structurally sound, while using two screws on the outer sides of the boards can help prevent warping and cupping.

The best base materials for a ground-level or floating deck are typically gravel and crushed stone (also known as landscaping rocks). These options are inexpensive, provide excellent drainage, prevent weeds, and help minimize moisture buildup, which reduces shifting and rotting. For added stability and to evenly distribute the weight, you can use concrete deck blocks or pavers. While more expensive, concrete blocks and pavers offer a sturdier base than gravel or crushed stone alone.

The life expectancy of deck boards varies widely based on the material, climate, and maintenance. Untreated wood boards typically last 10 to 30 years with proper care, while pressure-treated boards can last up to 50 years. Hardwoods generally outlast softwoods. Composite boards also tend to last longer than natural wood. Environmental factors like arid or humid climates can shorten a deck's lifespan. To extend the life of wood decking, it's important to consistently clean and seal it to protect against moisture, UV light, and insects.
