"I couldn't have expected a better service, and that's after using several engineers in the tri-state for past work. This engineer also goes above and beyond. He is meticulous, honest and very responsive. He was truly a pleasure to deal with. I will absolutely be using him again, and I wholeheartedly recommend him.

"We had 2-3 years of constant road work as a result of storm Sandy (gas line and water line replacement) and there was a crack that expanded over time in the living area on the second floor. We needed to know if it was structural or cosmetic. Anthony arrived on time and began to examine the crack as well as take measurements to determine any significant changes. He was familiar with the land issues in this area, which I appreciated. He explained as he went along and also went to every room in the home and outside for any other evidence of cracks. He was extremely thorough in his inspection and advised how to correct the issue. In addition he also gave tips regarding procedures for any renovations on the property which was extremely helpful. There was a fee for the inspection and an additional fee for a written report. I would definitely hire again if I have any issues."

"We had an amazing experience working with Denny on our home project in Huntington, NY. From the very first consultation, their team listened closely to our ideas and translated them into a beautiful, functional design that exceeded our expectations. Every detail was thoughtfully considered, blending modern style with practical solutions that perfectly fit our family’s needs. The process was smooth from start to finish—professional, responsive, and always clear with communication. What stood out most was their creativity and ability to bring our vision to life while keeping everything on budget and on schedule. The end result is a stunning home that we’re proud to show off and enjoy every day. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a top-tier residential architecture firm. They truly deliver quality, passion, and craftsmanship."

"

I came across Mark Michaels and Great Designs by doing a Google search for Stony Brook Architects.  I viewed his web site and looked at the work he had done for other clients.. I was impressed so I contacted him via email with my details and received a phone call back from him later that same day.  We discussed how my wife and I had recently purchased this house and wanted to make some changes to it.  The house is on a nice parcel of land with a water views and beautiful sunsets, however it is quite unique and a bit eclectic.   The house also posed zoning difficulties as it is situated against the back of an oddly shaped lot.  Our objective was to add a first floor master bedroom and bath without losing any of the existing water views.

My wife and I met with Mark and showed him the house.  He shared his initial thoughts and observations and we agreed to take the next step.  Mark prepared a proposal for his services which we thought were quite reasonable.  We agreed to move forward.

Mark made several visits to the house, took measurements and made notes.  He even video taped the house.  The house has two levels but the layout is one of a kind.  There are many nooks, odd shaped rooms and changing elevations.  Mark took all this information and somehow entered it perfectly into his architectural software.  He then used these tools to illustrate how the planned addition would look and its impact on the entire home.  We were able to do a virtual tour of the inside and outside of the proposed structure.  We quickly became comfortable with the design and moved to the next stage.

Mark prepared extensive building documents which we used to get contractor bids.  I also was able to walk into the building department and leave with a building permit on the first visit.  We hired a contractor and the project progressed smoothly.  Mark made frequent visits to the site and really took ownership of his work.  Several of the tradesmen commented to me how impressed they were with his passion for the project, his attention to detail and the integrity of his design.

Well, as of this writing the project is well on its way to completion.  It has been a positive experience. My wife and I highly recommend you give Great Designs a look.

"I am at the beginning of a complete home renovation and have been working with Steve Scheibly and Diversified Design Associates since day 1. Steve is patient, responsive, has a great eye for design and function and is a wonderful architect. We hired him after several friends and family members worked with him for similar projects and highly recommended him and Diversified. We have had the opportunity to see the work done on those projects and were very impressed by the detail, thoughtfulness and sophistication demonstrated by the final design. We highly recommend Steve and Diversified!"

": Ray was very helpful in realizing our dream extensions. Our project included building a two story additions. A new family room and a new master bedroom including master bathroom. All other architects were out of our price range. We were glad to find Ray because we could afford him. He didn't use a computer rendering of what our project would look like so we were limited to reading the blueprints. At first Ray made blueprints of the new extension with a 3 foot offset from the property line because it was against the ordinance to build new structures less than 6 ft. We had an existing exterior wall 3 feet from the property line. This is where I made a mistake to not question Ray. Ray's advice was to stay away from filing for variances. I let him continue with writing up the blueprints. I submitted the plans to the building department for approvals. It took months and while I was waiting, I called the town and asked them about the 3 foot offset. Remember, I had a existing pre-ordinance wall already there. Why couldn't I just extend that wall ? They said to me "that's a question your architect should be asking us". They wouldn't answer my question so I had to call Ray to calol them to get an answer. This delayed getting the permits another month. When he finally got the answer, it was "yes" we could just extend the existing wall without filing a variance. Ray had to draw up new plans and resubmit the plans and then the town rejected his plans. This was extremely frustration to us because it had nothing to do with the extension. It was about minor details. So that took another month. Again, Ray had to resubmit plans. Through all this Ray was very gracious and apologized to us but it wasn't all his fault. Overall he is a good architect but you have to question him more. If you're not happy with his plans, he will do whatever possible to satisfy you."

Architects questions, answered by experts

Regular meetings, reviewing drafts, and providing input on materials help align the project with your vision.

You'll find Arts and Crafts homes across the country in varying styles. On the East Coast, bungalows and Tudor Revivals fill the Boston area through New Jersey. In the West, Mission-style homes incorporate terracotta shingles, white stucco siding, and rounded archways.

Cathedral ceilings make a statement in your home, but at the cost of your attic space. Normal attics are wide open, which allows warm air to move around and exit your home. Because of this, cathedral ceilings make your home less energy efficient and put your ceiling at risk of venting issues if you’re not careful. They also reduce your attic storage space, potentially cause an echo, and even make it harder to change a light bulb.

Costs depend on project complexity, materials, labor, permits, and required revisions.

Typically, architects do not build homes in a hands-on sense of doing the actual framing, roofing, or other building. Architects usually do not have the training and experience to build the homes they design. An architect would need to know how to do the specific trades required to build a house, which is possible but not a common practice. A general contractor or homebuilder typically oversees the actual details of building the house that the architect designs.
