"Dan did an amazing job with our project! He built a solid, level foundation and constructed a large shed with loft area. He was skilled, efficient, dependable, and knowledgeable. And also just an all around cool, friendly person to work with. We would not hesitate to call him for additional projects!"

"Our house is over 100 years old and has a stone foundation. On the uphill side of the house, water would come through the wall and run across the floor. Having worked with David Friedlander before on other work I called him up. He suggested digging out to the footings and waterproofing the outside of the foundation. When we dug out, we found that the outside of the foundation was loose and unmortared--sealing wouldn't work well. He suggested building a form around the foundation and pouring a new concrete wall around the existing foundation. It worked amazingly well. The basement is dry as a bone, and the foundation should be good for another hundred years at least! His crew is professional and hard-working. They worked through a snowstorm, and took great care of our place. Best of all, David and the rest of the business are easy to communicate with, clear on expectations and needs, transparent on costs, are able to be scheduled quickly, and work fast. They're great!"

"I grew up in a circa 1950 split level house. The house has not been updated in at least 20 years [or maintained]. The house needed a complete overhaul - including electrical, plumbing, heating, and A/C, inside cosmetic, and outside. We hired Gene and his son Ryan at the referral of a close friend; to add a two floor addition and gut renovate the original house sections. The gut renovation included turning a one bedroom/garage lower level into a 2 bedroom apartment, with 1.5 baths,
and a living room/patio.
These guys are fantastic. They show up every day. They are honest. They are happy to explain every detail. They care and it shows. I can't remember a time I called Gene and he did not pick up his phone. If you are planning on building a
house or something you want to last for 100 years - these are the guys for the task. It is quality work you can trust.
To start, Gene expanded on the architect's plans during the framework creating an even better floor plan. He also recommended built-ins and pop-outs that are amazing. Once that was complete, they installed the plumbing fast/neat. Then electrical, then heating. All wonderfully neat/organized. He took the mess of wires from the side of the house and brought them inside, creating a very neat utility closet.
We had old oak floors in parts of the house. He used pieces from various areas to floor the entire upstairs. They then refinished it and it looks amazing. In all other areas, they put down a great looking pine wood.
We got rid of the attics and created a vaulted ceiling. He re-framed the entire support structure. The house feels 20 times
bigger.
They installed all new big windows; including places that did not have windows prior.
Honestly, they did so much work - I can't possibly list it. We had had NO problems. I can't stress that enough.
This job was not easy. I'm sure of it. The whole house was falling apart and crooked. They somehow took this old house and built it into a solid modern split level. You can only believe it if you see it. It is shocking.
The house started as a single family 4 bedroom house with 2.5 baths with a single kitchen. The same house [with not much bigger footprint] now is a mother/daughter home with 6 bedrooms, 3 full baths, two half baths, two full kitchens, vaulted ceilings, all new plumbing, heating, electric, new floors, new Hardy Board siding [outside], new windows, new everything! All flawless.
Gene and his son Ryan bring back an old school craftsmanship that is a breathe of fresh air. The have true pride in their work. As a last side note, they are very respectful. My mom was living on-site for most of the renovation. They were very kind and made her as comfortable as possible.
I would hire then for any job, big and small. Having a contractor you can trust is priceless.

Greenhouses and Nurseries questions, answered by experts

Eco-friendly materials include sustainably-sourced woods, recycled metals, low-VOC paints, and non-toxic sealants, which reduce environmental impact. Using these in repairs promotes sustainability and can improve indoor air quality and overall building health.

The quickest way you can protect plants and trees from frost is to cover them with garden blankets or frost cloths. Also, bringing potted plants or trees indoors is much simpler than trying to cover and protect them outdoors. Remember to anchor blankets with something such as sandbags, fabric pins, or rocks if the forecast calls for strong winds to keep them from blowing away and exposing your trees and plants.

In most cases, wait three to five days to repot or relocate a plant from a greenhouse or nursery. That way, your plant has time to recover from any shock during the move and adapt to the conditions in and around your home. Some hearty plants may not need as long, and delicate plants might need several weeks. You should ask the professional at your nursery for a recommended timeline. Consider asking about an initial watering schedule to help stimulate root growth and promote a healthy plant.

Minor fixes like patching leaks or repainting are DIY-friendly, but structural repairs require professional expertise.

Adding burnt charcoal to your garden beds and plant pots can yield several benefits, but there are risks involved, too. Charcoal, particularly biochar, can enhance soil structure, improve water drainage, and increase nutrient retention. When activated, charcoal provides key nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. However, burnt charcoal, especially from briquettes, can inadvertently alter soil's pH levels and become hazardous to plants. Overall, there are better and less risky soil amendments available, such as vermiculite, perlite, or wood chips.
