"When we discovered that the top of our chimney needed repairs, and that the whole chimney needed to be a foot higher to meet code, we looked for a chimney design that would look good, and a person to accomplish this. When Anthony from Four Winds Masonry and Chimney came to meet us, he impressed us by his knowledge and experience of chimneys and his attention to our thoughts and concerns. He proposed a lift rather than scaffolding that could scar our new roof and offered to bring samples of bricks that most closely matched out existing chimney. He also seemed delighted to have an artistic challenge. The work took 4 days, as he said, and we are thrilled with the results which add to the look of the house. Anthony and his helper Kyle were a pleasure to know and to have working around the house, did an excellent job and left the site perfectly clean. Wolf & Elizabeth S."

"This company came to clean my chimney. I believe that is not their main job. I told them I just purchased the house and they should have made sure I knew how to use it properly. They charged me for a video service cleaning I did not see. They should show you what they see. They did not check my flu, or if they did they mentioned nothing about it. I asked them about the size, if it was suitable and they said they it was small and the fire might come out the top and how to put the wood in. I wish they could have given more information. Also, they could have told me that the grate was broken instead of putting it back in. Finally, they emptied their shop vac on my driveway and tried to clean it up. It was a mess. I would not hire them for cleaning a fireplace."

Chimney Sweep questions, answered by experts

The first thing you should do when cleaning smoke damage is open all your windows to ventilate the affected area and run an air purifier with a HEPA filter. Cover your furniture and belongings to prevent soot accumulation, and vacuum any soot that’s on the floor and other surfaces. Be sure to wear a mask, gloves, and eye protection when cleaning the affected area.

Pricing a fire-damaged house is tricky, and it’s best to involve some professionals. First, get a comprehensive repair estimate from a fire damage restoration expert. Next, have a real estate agent get you an as-repaired value for the home, which represents what the house would be worth if fully repaired. Subtract the repair estimate from the as-repaired value to get the as-is value.

Restoration involves assessing damage, cleaning, deodorizing, repairing structures, and replacing damaged items, following a detailed and systematic approach.

The timeline for fire damage restoration varies significantly, from a day or two to over a year, depending on the extent of the damage. For minor incidents like a small cooking fire, cleaning up soot and removing smoke odors may only take a day or two. Repairing minor damage might take about one to two weeks. However, a major fire requiring structural repairs, full property renovation, and replacement of materials can take anywhere from six to 12 months to over a year. This longer timeline often includes waiting for insurance approvals and contractor scheduling. It's best to consult with your insurance provider and restoration team to get an accurate timeline for your specific situation.

After a house fire, you should not reenter your home unless the fire crew has told you it’s safe to do so. In the longer term, you should not attempt to make repairs to the house on your own. Professional crews are trained to clean up after a fire (including smoke and soot damage), dry out any water damage from the firefighter crews, and make the necessary structural, plumbing, and electrical repairs—and this is all likely covered by insurance.
