I got started doing this type of work because as just a young boy and I have been training on the job and in life for over 35 years. My parents managed the apartment complex we lived in when I was young. I knew how to do plumbing, electrical, woodworking, tiling, and more before I was 10 years old. As a teenager, I learned how to rebuild cars and eventually went to work in a machine shop where I trained as a welder. I spent time working for my father in laws construction company building houses, where I learned framing, roofing, siding, drywalling,window/door installs and replacements, etc. I have continued to educate myself and refine my skills throughout my life, started workwooding, refinishing furniture, and building custom pieces. I have put those all of those skills to use over the years, caring for my home and helping out family, friends, and neighbors. From there, it developed into referrals and a steady stream of repeat clients. I do my best to keep my pricing affordable because I personally don't like overpaying or feeling like I was taken advantage of. I never want to push any recommendation onto a client that they are uncomfortable with or would cause them financial hardships. I do this to help people first and foremost, which is why 90% of my business is repeat and referrals. I treat my clients and their homes with respect. The last thing I want is for someone to feel uncomfortable in their own home that they have worked very hard to have. I treat my clients' like family and their homes how I would want mine treated. I treat every customer as an individual because they are. I tailor each job to that particular clients situation. I make sure they understand what is involved in the process from start to finish, and I do my best to leave everything as clean as when I started.

Furniture Refinishing questions, answered by experts

When deciding whether to reupholster, repair, or replace old furniture, consider its age, level of wear and tear, and overall value. It’s usually better to repair old furniture because older pieces tend to be made out of hardwood, like oak and maple, whereas newer furniture is more often made out of plywood, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and other less durable materials. When determining whether it’s worth the price to repair a furniture item, calculate the price of buying a new, similar piece and compare that to quotes from local furniture repair services.

For small, simple pieces that aren’t antiques, a professional furniture refinisher can usually refinish a piece in two to three hours, while larger pieces—like bed frames and full dining sets—could take several days. Your refinishing professional should be able to give you an estimated timeline for the work before getting started so that you can plan to be without your furniture during the process. Antique furniture might require additional time and take a week or more to refinish, as they require special care to avoid damage.

Removing the original paint or stain before refinishing is a good idea, as it ensures the new finish bonds strongly to the wood. If you skip the stripping or sanding step, the new finish may peel or flake away from the railing easily. Using a wood stripper will completely remove the old stain or paint while sanding will help to prime the surface.

Restoring furniture generally takes less time because the fixes involved are mostly surface-level cosmetic repairs. In most cases, a project like this will be completed in one to two days at most. By contrast, refinishing can take anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks because it requires sanding and treating damaged wood, adding a new stain, finish, or layer of paint, and drying time.

If your couch is damaged, you are not out of options. You might try fixing it on your own, bring in a furniture repair specialist, or opt to get rid of it responsibly. Depending on its condition, you could donate, sell, recycle, or drop it off at a local scrap facility.
