"This is gonna be a long one. I contacted Ken as I heard many glowing reviews from people in my area. He answered the phone after hours (7:30 p.m) and was able to ease my mind about an issue I was having with a leak in my wall due to a wire running to my well pump. I talked to people at Lowe's, home depot and a few other places and they all told me to use materials that did not work at all. When I called Ken he told me to use Duct Seal which was $4 bucks (way cheaper than any of the other solutions that I was told to try). I should have called Ken first! I did what Ken told me to and it stopped the leak for the most part, but due to heavy rain the water kind of kept coming in. I called Ken the next morning and told him that I was slightly electrocuted when putting the Duct Seal in. He said he would come on Monday which he did. He inspected my work and informed me of some details that I won't disclose here, but needless to say, he made me feel like responsible homeowner. I had a ton of questions for him which he took the time to answer. He showed me what all the pipes to the water softener go to, all my sump pump questions, well questions, septic tank questions. He answered everything! I was extremely impressed. He gave me his personal cell number and told me to call him if I had any questions at all. On a very personal note, it's extremely difficult to meet someone with Ken's experience, kindness and honesty. He went above and beyond anybody I have ever called to the house. You could tell that he loved what he does. I am 100 percent satisfied and cannot recommend Ken enough. As odd as this is to say, I look forward to Ken fixing my future problems. Now I know that if there are any issues who to call. 5 stars. I'd give 10 if I could. Extremely impressed."

"Well, the first time the replacement was ordered it was the wrong one, which of course, delayed the installation a week. When it was finally installed I had to pay an additional $850 for code upgrades. This I was not informed of by Home Shield. Then we noticed that there was water on the garage floor and found that the pipe coming in from the wall was leaking at the wall so had to call the plumbing company back out to fix it. They first tried to say it was not their fault but since there wasn't a leak before they installed they did fix it. I have used Home Shield a few times before and never had a problem. Some of the companies they use are not the best so you have to research them before you commit. I have found HS service to be good if you do your homework. At the end of the day I was without hot water for almost 3 weeks but it was do to the plumbing company they sent out."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Hard water stains can be a headache because they will reoccur as long as hard water flows through. Thankfully, hard water stains are not permanent. With the right tools and an appropriate cleaning routine, you can prevent hard water stains from ever building up. However, you might feel like you are stuck in a constant cleaning cycle. In that case, you may consider hiring a contractor to perform routine cleaning.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

No. You should never directly drain a water softener into a sewer cleanout. This practice is illegal in many areas because it could allow raw sewage to get into your drinking water and make you seriously ill. Many places have codes requiring a specific seal, pipe, and a large air gap between a water softener and a sewage cleanout. Check out Florida's Plumbing Building Code as an example of what these restrictions might look like.

A water softener is a worthwhile investment if you live in an area with hard water. While hard water is safe to drink, it contains minerals like calcium and magnesium that can cause significant problems over time. These minerals build up inside pipes, reducing water flow and eventually corroding the plumbing system, which can lead to leaks and a shortened lifespan. Hard water also damages fixtures and appliances, potentially resulting in costly repairs. Additionally, it makes soaps and detergents less effective, meaning you'll use more product to get things clean. By installing a water softener, you can prevent these issues. The initial investment is often recouped through long-term savings, including lower energy bills, reduced appliance and plumbing maintenance, and spending less on soap and cleaning supplies. Other benefits include cleaner linens, dishes, and clothing, as well as softer water that is gentler on your skin and hair. In some areas, a water softener can also increase your home's value, making it a valuable long-term investment.

A single shower consumes an average of over 17 gallons, while brushing your teeth with the water running uses up to four unnecessary gallons. Watering the lawn spreads hundreds of gallons of water across the yard each time. Limiting water usage in these areas can significantly cut down your water bill.
