Highfield Joinery is a one man operation focusing in high-level historical knowledge and legacy materials, including linseed paint and putty, lime mortar, and high levels of salvage, dutchman repairs, patching, and "re-livening" wood considered unsalvageable. This can save thousands, especially for old doors and window sashes, attics, siding, and porches, while preserving the architectural integrity and therefore curb value others may not be aware of. Because of the age and uniqueness of each task, I use many hand tools which allow the flexibility and detail required, but also encourage the same results and even tool marks as the originals, and can be an absolute value over time as they may last just as long. I has become common to spend a year’s salary on a repair, only to find it failing or aged in just a short while. Our ethos is the opposite: to fix it so properly and accurately that it never needs to be looked at again in your lifetime. As the Originals Were.

"I have hired Eric for multiple furniture repairs/restorations(chairs, server/sideboard, dining table) and he has done an amazing job every time. Iâ ve been hesitant because a lot of antique furniture is just irreplaceable but everything he touches turns out beautiful. If you need someone to repair or restore your furniture, Eric is a 10/10 recommendation!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

You can repair plaster ceilings yourself after the cause of the ceiling damage has been addressed. However, the repair can easily take 5 hours and can be slightly challenging for those without previous experience. If you do decide to flex your DIY muscle, have a helper to help hold the ladder and pass you the tools for safety purposes.

While it’s most common to sand plaster dry, it is possible to wet-sand plaster, too. Doing so can reduce the amount of plaster dust released into the air and make it easier to work in smaller, more delicate areas (such as around wall trim). However, some people find that wet sanding leads to more imperfections, which is why larger walls are more often dry sanded to ensure an even finish.

Ceiling-mounted curtains won’t damage the ceiling if they’re installed properly. Using the right anchors or securing the brackets into joists will ensure the curtain weight is properly supported and prevent damage. However, overtightening screws, using weak anchors, or repeatedly removing and reinstalling hardware in the same spot can cause cracking or sagging over time. In that case, you might have to call a pro for ceiling repair.

Your walls are likely cracking due to fluctuations in the temperature outside. Drywall tends to expand and contract when temperatures and humidity levels change, and this repeated movement can lead to cracks in your walls, particularly around door frames. If you have multiple diagonal cracks, you may want to have your foundation inspected, as cracks can also be a sign of a bigger issue.

Yes, you can use drywall repair techniques for some types of plaster damage. Tiny holes and small cracks in plaster can be patched in similar ways to drywall. You apply the necessary compound to fill the hole, wait for it to dry, then sand it down. For larger damage, like water damage or mold, you need to use plaster-specific techniques and materials.
