"When we discovered that the top of our chimney needed repairs, and that the whole chimney needed to be a foot higher to meet code, we looked for a chimney design that would look good, and a person to accomplish this. When Anthony from Four Winds Masonry and Chimney came to meet us, he impressed us by his knowledge and experience of chimneys and his attention to our thoughts and concerns. He proposed a lift rather than scaffolding that could scar our new roof and offered to bring samples of bricks that most closely matched out existing chimney. He also seemed delighted to have an artistic challenge. The work took 4 days, as he said, and we are thrilled with the results which add to the look of the house. Anthony and his helper Kyle were a pleasure to know and to have working around the house, did an excellent job and left the site perfectly clean. Wolf & Elizabeth S."

"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

"I do not even know where to begin! We went into their showroom purchasing a lawn mower and ended up going back for a gas fireplace!! Ken our salesman made selecting each part very easy for us. Communication was good throughout the whole process. We has Bryan and Patrick for installation. The project was supposed to be 3 days and they finished in 2 ! As far as mantle, surround, and tile it was built on site not prepackaged. He sat down and worked with us to figure the best dimensions and sizing to not overwhelm the room but accommodate the ceiling height. I also did not want the fancy molding and rosettes because it just doesn't suit my taste or my house. He brought over all his stuff and layed it out so we could get an idea of the finished product. They were absolutely AMAZING. I can not recommend them enough. And just for the record our initial purchase, the lawn mower, is fantastic. Best one we have ever bought. ** for the record because when looking for a fireplace installer the most common negative review was installers not meeting code enforcement regulations on other companies. Martins had good reviews on that. I work for the Code office where I live and the CEO did his inspection and said everything was above standard! This is so important for safety and I was beyond pleased with this aspect too!)"

"We have Frontpoint at two houses. We had been looking for ways to cut our monthly expenses (Frontpoint is approx. $100 per month total), so I called them to find out what I could do. They informed me that I was under contract for another year, and that I cannot get out of the contract without an early termination fee that is equal to the cost of the service. I'm a little disappointed, because the upfront cost of the system was very expensive ($1,000+) for each house, so it seems odd that I would get sucked into this contract. Nevertheless, I forgot that I signed up for this with them. My calendar is marked for the day that my service ends, and I will be switching to a company that charges about half of what they do. They have OK customer service and are very responsive, but the wireless system had some issues with reception in my house due to a fireplace, and then they didn't want to work with me to get that resolved. They're OK, but I can't really recommend them."

"Jesse and his crew are true professionals.  Jesse was the first on the job, last one off it.  My carpenter father-in-law had the highest praise for his work, especially his attention to keeping the job-site clear of debris during and after the job.
Pricing was no-nonsense and the best I found when getting estimates.
We worked together via email for a couple months before the project making decisions about the ventilation and Jesse was knowledgeable and willing to make adjustments when necessary.  Jesse also proved flexible when I needed to change the project date at the last minute.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

No, because they burn propane or natural gas, gas fireplaces do not generate ash like wood-burning fireplaces. However, gas fireplaces require maintenance, such as cleaning the glass doors, checking for debris in the burner or vents, and ensuring the logs or glass stones are in place. This maintenance ensures that the fireplace continues to operate efficiently and safely.

You can let a fire burn out in a fireplace as long as you or someone else will stick around to monitor it until it goes completely out. This may take several hours. To prepare, stop adding fuel to the fire well before you’re ready to call it a night. If you’re using the fireplace for warmth, you’ll want to cover up in some blankets as the flame dies down.

Your fireplace flue is open when the chimney is unsealed and open to the outside air and sky. That’s why one of the best ways to figure out if your flue is open is to visually check for daylight inside of your chimney—or to feel for a draft, which may be generated by the difference in temperatures inside and outside of your home.

No, not all chimneys need a damper. However, most chimneys do, especially in newer homes. Most gas-burning fireplaces cannot function safely without a damper. Only some older wood-burning fireplaces can function safely without one. A chimney without a damper is essentially just an open hole in the roof of your home.

Yes, burning wood with Dutch elm disease is a safer way to dispose of it than, say, tossing it in with the rest of your yard waste, which could potentially allow it to spread to healthy trees. But it’s always a good idea to check with your local government to make sure you’re complying with any ordinances about removing diseased trees as well as burning brush piles.
