Under-cabinet lights are typically affixed to mounts that are drilled into the cabinet using screws. Cable staples are used to secure the cords in place. Alternatively, tape lights can be attached directly to the underside of the cabinet using adhesive. These installation methods provide secure and versatile—and potentially removable—options for illuminating your kitchen space.

Motion-sensor lights use one watt while on standby and five watts while turned on. They’re usually on for one hour over a 24-hour period, bringing the total wattage to about 28 watts per day. LED lights use around 6.5 to 8 watts while on. If you leave an LED light on all night, with night ranging from 10 to 14 hours, you’re looking at using 65 to 112 watts a night. You can minimally cut your wattage in half by switching to a motion-sensor light.

The main difference between can vs. canless lighting lies in their design. Can lighting is the most traditional form of recessed lighting and includes a can-shaped housing to hold the bulb. Can lighting also has a mounting frame that secures the light to the ceiling between the joists.

Canless lighting doesn’t have a recessed housing design. Instead, it has a single unit with an integrated junction box that connects directly to your home’s electrical wiring through the ceiling. Most canless designs have thin, slimline discs with LED lighting.

It’s generally best to have your chandelier hang over the center of your dining table. If you’re installing your chandelier first or changing recessed lighting to a chandelier, you might find a table afterward and arrange the room around the chandelier.

If you’ve already furnished the space and are choosing where to place your lighting, hang the fixture directly over the table so everyone is well-lit while they dine.

A ceiling light will usually have two or three wires: black, white, and sometimes green. Black wires are positive, or hot, while white wires are negative, or neutral. The green wire is the grounding wire. 

When you’re wiring the light, connect black to black, white to white, and green to the grounding screw.
