Common Sense, Real-World Engineering Solutions At LEVEL, we are committed to common sense, real-world solutions. We pioneered LEVEL because, after years spent exploring all disciplines of civil and structural engineering in the building industry, we continually encountered the missing fundamentals in our own trade. These lost elements of service culture & exceptional business practice inevitably cost owners & entities untold stress and frustration; contractors lost time & money, realtors & lenders were left unable to satisfy their clients' needs. We concluded that our capacity for A&E services could function at a higher level, thus, LEVEL Engineering & Inspections was founded. We serve your interests & provide knowledgeable, expert design, inspections, analysis, forensics, recommendations, and reporting. Whether your need is for permitting, forensics; new, remodel, or repair engineering designs; foundation problems; civil or architecture - let us help you navigate your Civil, Commercial, Residential Structural Engineering needs.

"The service was good. The engineer was good. He was professional and he knows his stuff. He knows his job very well."

"We got ripped off. Jeff inspected our garage due to a structural issue we were having. He did a very cursory inspection and would have to come back for another inspection. Mistakenly, we paid Jeff in full, and he was to send us an invoice. It was necessary for us to have an opening made in one wall before he could do a further inspection. Jeff returned for the second inspection. He promised to send us our invoice and a full report with his observations and recommendations on what needed to be done along with names of contractors who could do the work. We have never received anything from Jeff. After some excuses, he never answered or returned our calls. He also did not respond to the Better Business Bureau after we filed a complaint with them. Veritas means "truth" in Latin. That is not what you will get from Veritas Engineering and Inspection."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

The National Association of Home Builders requires repair of any foundation crack of more than one quarter of an inch, although local regulations may vary. In general, any visible crack that is growing in size, allowing water through, or that you have just noticed, is a good reason to call a structural engineer. Cracks can be a sign of a sinking foundation, so an inspection is a good idea for your peace of mind.

Trusses and rafters each have advantages and disadvantages, so one isn’t necessarily better than the other. For example, trusses are more affordable and often come in prefabricated kits, so they’re easier to build than rafters. However, rafters are available in a variety of designs, so it’s easier to find one that fits your style preferences. Plus, if you want to build an attic at some point down the line, it’s far easier to do that with rafters rather than trusses.

A 4-inch-thick concrete slab can support around 4,000 pounds per square foot if a contractor reinforces the slab with rebar, while that same slab without reinforcements will support closer to 1,000 pounds. For the purposes of a patio, 4 inches in thickness without reinforcement should suffice unless you’re installing heavy kitchen equipment or a hot tub on it. In those cases, reinforcing your slab and sticking with 4 inches of thickness should provide plenty of strength.

Costs depend on material choices, labor, and the extent of structural modifications.

The depth of any foundation style depends on your climate and how deep the frost line is, as building code requires that the footers of a foundation—which are built into a monolithic slab—sit at least a foot below the frost line. At the southern tip of Florida, for example, a monolithic slab foundation would only need to sit 12 inches under the soil at the widest parts. On some parts of the Canadian border, the frost line is 100 inches, which would mean a minimum of 112 inches, which is prohibitively deep for a monolithic slab.
