"This is a great small business. The team came out as scheduled and went above and beyond to complete the work we were quoted for. We did a pre and post work walk around and I was so pleased with the results. It was a very large job, deadwooding and reshaping over 10 very large and tall trees and shaping/clearing out juniper bushes and removing 3 stumps. They also fertilized the trees and sprayed the junipers for pests. It was such a transformation for these plants and our yard. They were all kind, courteous and worked hard! I definitely recommend them and will definitely reach out again to them in the future. Thanks!!"

Small jobs welcome

"Donald was excellent!!Never expected my ash tree to look so refreshed and healthy after removal of the ivy ( almost from the ground to the top of the tree)Honest, hardworking. He was at least $400 under the next lowest estimate. He was spot on his estimated time frame. . He is now my go to arborist for any of my work related to trees. I would recommend Donald at Arbtrek to anyone who wants excellent work for an honest price!! Just incredible!!"

"I want to give a big shout out to Urban Woodland Tree Care, LLC (775-525-0513) for coming out today to rescue a cat that was stuck high in a tree for three days and was heading toward a bad end with no water. We had already tried the fire company, Animal Control, and other resources to no avail. (Cats can go up trees easily but not down, especially when they are up that high.) A tree climber and the owner of Urban Woodland Tree Care arrived in relatively short order on a weekend and did this for free out of caring and compassion for the kitty and as a good deed to our community, as several neighbors were very distressed by this. I had a very good impression of this company and hope others will consider using their business and will promote them to others in order to support them for this kind act."

"Knowledgeable, on time and did more by far than bargained for, all of it expertly.. I was so pleased I added considerable extra money to try to cover the additional work; the boss divided it up among the crew as a tip. I am so glad I chose Great Basin and will go to them in the future any time I need the services of an arborist."

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Yes, burning wood with Dutch elm disease is a safer way to dispose of it than, say, tossing it in with the rest of your yard waste, which could potentially allow it to spread to healthy trees. But it’s always a good idea to check with your local government to make sure you’re complying with any ordinances about removing diseased trees as well as burning brush piles.

In general, trees should be planted no closer than 15 to 20 feet from your foundation. For larger trees with far-reaching roots like maples, oaks, or poplars, a good guide is to plant as many feet from your home as the tree’s height is expected to reach at maturity. Some trees, like elms and willows, should only be planted far from where their roots may encounter sewer or water lines.

Transplanting a palm tree is a similar process except for a couple of important differences. First, their root ball doesn’t need to be as large as a “true” tree, which makes them a bit easier to dig up and move around. Second, they struggle more with taking root and staying upright in a new location, so it’s important to give them extra support when staking.

It's easy to misidentify trees that appear to be maple trees due to similarities in leaf shapes. Sweetgum, sycamore, and yellow poplar all have leaf shapes and appearances similar to maples. The fact that around a dozen maple tree varieties exist, only about half of which are considered common, makes misidentification an often typical occurrence.

No. Topping a tree refers to severely cutting down all its major branches and tree in a straight line. It was once recommended for streetside deciduous trees but has fallen out of practice. Topping leads to many problems, removing so much of the tree that many trees struggle to survive and become much more vulnerable to insects and diseases. Also, it doesn’t really help tree growth as once assumed and often leads to an ugly appearance of many sprouting stems in competition to become new main branches.
