Room Resolutions is a luxury interior design boutique that specializes in large-scale residential and commercial design in Nevada, Hawaii, California and across the United States and Internationally. Jane Cunningham is the CEO, President and Principal Designer. Jane grew up in Exeter, New Hampshire and had an early connection to music and theatre. A classically trained musician, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Music Education and a Masters in Music and worked as the Director of a large, not-for-profit foundation before establishing her firm and a career in design. As the Principal Clarinetist for the Honolulu Symphony and the Hawaii Philharmonic, Cunningham was inspired by, and skilled at finding her way through the slow, sad intimacy of the second movement. It’s likely why she’s drawn to working with clients who are unexpectedly reinventing the second chapter of their lives. “When you play an instrument, you put yourself into the sound and take people out of the moment to feel something bigger. It’s the same with design. The second movement has a lot of texture. There’s a whole lot more color that people don’t see. I go deep. For me, it’s about creating moments of sanctuary.” With her husband, an Air Force Diplomat, Cunningham has traveled to four continents as an ambassador of design and culture in countries as diverse as Scandinavia, Greenland and Russia.

Upholstering questions, answered by experts

The time to reupholster a couch often ranges from one to three weeks, depending on the upholsterer's workload, fabric availability, and the complexity of your couch. This breaks down between 10 and 20 hours if you hire a professional, or 20 to 40 hours if you DIY. Custom features or repairs may extend the timeline.

As with any project, weighing the pros and cons of upholstery can help determine if that is the right choice for you. The ultimate question is whether it’s worth reupholstering instead of buying new furniture. Here are a few of the benefits and disadvantages of reupholstering a piece of furniture.

Pros:

  • Preserving a family heirloom

  • Maintaining high-quality furniture in good condition

  • Reinventing an old piece of furniture

  • Keeping a piece of furniture from going to a landfill

Cons:

  • Spending (possibly) more than to buy a new piece of furniture

  • Finding out the frame is beyond repair

  • Waiting for the reupholstery work to be done

Ongoing maintenance of your leather furniture is the only way to prevent it from peeling and cracking. Real leather will peel and crack as it dries out. Leather conditioners are a great way to protect your leather furniture from drying out, and you’ll need to apply it about twice each year. It’s also a good idea to keep abrasive materials away from your leather to prevent cracking and peeling, including belt buckles, shoes, and multi-surface cleaners, especially those that contain alcohol.

Reupholstering is often worthwhile for high-quality, antique, or sentimental couches, especially if the frame is sturdy. It can cost less than buying a comparable new piece and allows for customization, but may not be cost-effective for low-end furniture.

You should consider the time needed to clean and prepare your bedroom set for transit. A few days before moving, vacuum, dust, and clean your furniture with a mild cleaning solution. Depending on the movers and the services you pick, you might need to pre-pack the mattress and box spring in boxes designed for beds and disassemble some furniture by removing doors and hardware. Finally, don’t forget to take plenty of pictures documenting the pre-move condition in case you need to file a claim.
