"He came over the following day, looked at it , tried a little dab of his solvent and and gave me some advice to continue to do what I was doing. He refused to charge me for the house call! I did give him some lunch money but whenever I need carpet or upholstery cleaning, he will definitely be the person I call. I'll tell all my neighbors about him as well."

Upholstery Cleaning questions, answered by experts

You should not use bleach to clean a mattress. Bleach is too harsh for most mattress fibers and can cause damage to mattress foam. In addition, bleach cannot be adequately rinsed out of a mattress, causing the smell to linger for a long time. Choose gentler cleaners like baking soda, dish soap, or enzyme cleaners.

Yes, you can rent or buy a steam cleaner. A heavy-duty steam cleaner costs between $175 and $250 at most retail outlets and online. You can also usually rent one for around $40 per day.

Most of the larger machines you can rent from a hardware or grocery store have a larger water reserve and a heating element. Both operate by moving slowly and methodically over the carpet. Whether you rent or buy a unit, you will want to stay off your carpet for at least 12 to 24 hours while they dry.

It’s best to avoid using furniture polish, any oil-based cleaners, varnish, ammonia, and cleaning solvents. Other harmful materials include chemicals like acetone or alcohol, which can cause severe damage to your couch.

If your dog has fleas, you should clean your couch and other upholstered furniture immediately. Fleas can lay eggs on furniture, and you can help remove them by regularly and thoroughly vacuuming your couch. Steam cleaning after vacuuming is also essential because the high heat can help kill the eggs and fleas on contact.

To remove pet urine stains and odors from a microfiber couch, first blot the area to absorb as much liquid as possible. Then, generously cover the spot with baking soda and let it sit for a few hours to absorb the odor before vacuuming it up.

For cleaning the stain itself, you can use a commercial urine stain and odor removal spray—be sure to follow the product's instructions.

Alternatively, you can use a DIY solution based on your couch's cleaning code:

  • For 'S' code couches: Lightly spritz the stain with rubbing alcohol and gently scrub with a microfiber cloth.

  • For 'W' or 'S-W' code couches: Use a mixture of one cup of vinegar and one cup of rubbing alcohol, spritzing and scrubbing the area gently.
