"The team cane early, were professional, timely and cleaned up at the end of each day. We could not have been more impressed with Art DeLaCerda, Cindy the project manager and the carpenters were all great! We will hire again and came in on budget and within timeline - reasonable price. Many other contractors did not show up as we were searching for help - these guys did it all right - we are very pleased. We would highly recommend this team, Daniel & Zoe Martinez"

"Contractor keep appointment (even though there were 2 or 3 calls expressing confusion about time and day); installed the drywall and cleaned the area.   The drywall installation was not smooth and when textured looked amateurish at best.  Before I could paint I had to sand several areas and apply canned texture-not the most professional look but time was a factor.  the next time the wall is painted will require extensive prep work to make it look professional.
Good things: appointment keep; work was done as explained; no extra charges.
Not so good: Technician was not a drywall guy.

"When we were cited by the city for uneven/unsafe sidewalk on our driveway ramp we weren't sure who to call. We looked on the Internet and found a few concrete contractors. After a few weeks of getting estimates, some high and some lower we decided on MountainSide contractors. They took the ramp out in a few hours, removing the tree root that was causing the damage. They were reasonably priced, quick and efficient. They got the whole job done in two days. They went above and beyond to make sure that the job looked good and that we were happy. The employees were friendly and responsive throughout the process. We're very happy with our new driveway ramp."

"Mr. Stressler was very easy to work with, and he did everything asked of him. His work met all of my expectations and specifications. Should I need any further remodeling, I would not hesitate to call Mr. Stressler. In category below asking for dates of service. But due to my travels, work was done in increments: master bath, kitchen, guest bathroom, and then in June a one day outside job in which a new door was put on a storage unit, and my security door was given a new coat of paint."

"It went fine. It was frustrating for both of us because I live in another state from where the work was being performed. And the contractor operates an hour away from where the work was to be performed. But he was thorough and got the job done and that meant a lot to me."

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Your local building code will list all the framing requirements for whatever type of structure you're building. Most exterior walls require spacing of 16 inches on-center, while many non-load-bearing interior walls only require 24 inches of spacing. However, there are also varying requirements depending on your construction material, so checking your municipality's rules is essential.

It's possible to turn your carport into a living space, but there are additional factors to address over turning it into a garage. HVAC, plumbing, and electricity won't be optional, and you'll need finished flooring, drywall, trim work, and legal ceiling height, for starters. Also, keep in mind that living space conversions may require upgrading the foundation underneath, and the permits might be more expensive as well.

A few signs that you need a new door frame include:

  • The door no longer fits properly in its frame and sticks or scrapes.

  • You notice cracks, holes, or rotting.

  • You feel a draft coming from around the door when it’s closed.

  • You find yourself frequently needing to make repairs.

For a professional carpenter, installing a window seat can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on some aspects of the project. Aside from building the seat itself, if they have to remove any cabinets, shelves, or baseboards, that will add time to the project.

Yes, you can find ceiling joists using simple tools if a stud finder isn't available.

Using a hammer requires patience and a keen ear. Gently tap the ceiling in a grid pattern, listening for sound changes. A hollow sound indicates space between joists, while a solid, dull thud suggests a joist. Mark the location with a pencil and confirm by tapping from different angles.

Alternatively, you can use a nail, but this method will leave small holes. You'll feel increased resistance when the nail hits a joist. Mark the spot and repeat the process every 16 or 24 inches to map the joist locations. This method is considered less reliable than using a stud finder.
