"Hoover’s was the ONLY one to get back to me and rather quickly. I decided to go ahead and use them. Aaron and Marcos were very professional and polite. Cleaned my HVAC ducts, exhaust vents, and my dryer vent (which was really dirty btw) in a timely manner and put everything back on when they were done. They cleaned up after themselves and even covered my stuff with plastic as they went. They took off their shoes as they came in and put down towels on the corners of furniture and the walls to avoid damaging them. Not sure if they were the cheapest option but they were the best option in my opinion. I’d definitely use them again. Thank you Marshall for answering me back and Aaron and Marcos for taking care of my vents."

Air Duct Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The most common duct sizes used in residential homes are round ducts 6 to 12 inches in diameter. This size is small enough to be easily installed into walls and ceilings, yet is wide enough to allow for adequate airflow through the home. Improper duct sizing can cause HVAC issues, increased energy bills, and a drop in HVAC efficiency, which translates into a less comfortable home. 

During your HVAC preseason maintenance call, your contractor will inspect the system for any problems and make small adjustments for better efficiency. Tasks include, though are not limited to: 

  • Changing filters

  • Checking the thermostat

  • Clearing away dust and debris

  • Checking for mold

  • Inspecting electrical elements

  • Inspecting condensate lines and drain

  • Cleaning evaporator coils

  • Ensuring ignition function

While you can do some of these services yourself, hiring a professional to keep HVAC equipment running can be helpful. These experts know what to look for and may be able to spot potential issues before they become problems. Many HVAC companies offer annual maintenance plans.

You do need dampers in your HVAC system, but they do help to regulate airflow and give you better control of the temperature in each room of your home. Most HVAC systems will have dampers installed, but this isn't always the case. If you don’t have designated zones in your home, you’ll likely still have valve control dampers on your supply vents for manual control.

Condensation forms when warmer, outside air combines with cooler air in your ductwork. This can happen when there are leaks in your air ducts, your HVAC system has a dirty air filter, or there’s a lack of insulation around the ducts. To prevent it from happening, replace your HVAC filters as directed. Also, once every five years, hire a local air duct cleaner to clean and inspect them.

Whether an HVAC damper should be open or closed depends on the season, the zone it controls, and the temperature in that zone. In the summer, open upstairs dampers and close lower-level dampers to get the most efficient cooling possible. In the winter, do the opposite. Cool air will naturally flow down to lower levels, while warm air will rise. This keeps your system from working harder and helps prevent common AC problems.
