"Great prompt service and they did a super job installing my new wood-stove. They were knowledgable, professional and worked hard to accommodate me. Arrived on time..exactly as planned. I highly recommend hiring them."

"Initially we all assumed the Kachina Fireplace was framed but that was not the case.  The existing fireplace was solid cement.  A back breaking job needless to say.  SMRT continued with the plan and removed and disposed all cement from the home.  Construction time took an additional 2 weeks due to the additional labor required to remove all the cement.  The T.V. and stereo were installed on the Fireplace wall and the living room gained an additional 12 sq ft.  The bedroom gained additional wall space and the now the new fireplace is up to code.  Unlike the original Kachina.  We enjoy working with Michael and his crew.  Always a job well done.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Even if a homebuyer has no intention of using the fireplace installed in the home they’re thinking of buying, it’s vital to know when the fireplace and chimney were last inspected. Aside from learning that it can operate properly, homebuyers will want to know that the structures themselves are sound and won’t affect the integrity of the surrounding home. With full knowledge, homebuyers can then make plans for any necessary repairs before they move in.

Your fireplace flue is open when the chimney is unsealed and open to the outside air and sky. That’s why one of the best ways to figure out if your flue is open is to visually check for daylight inside of your chimney—or to feel for a draft, which may be generated by the difference in temperatures inside and outside of your home.

Running a gas fireplace is potentially cheaper than using central heating if you are heating a single room and don’t need to heat the entire house. That's because gas fireplaces are a better source of direct heat, making them more efficient for warming small spaces. Central heating, while more efficient for whole-home warmth, uses more energy overall. Strategically using a gas fireplace, therefore, can help lower heating bills.

A fireplace is, by definition, an enclosed space where you burn wood or other fuel for the purpose of generating light and heat. A firepit burns wood and is much less expensive to build, but they aren’t technically a fireplace as it isn’t enclosed. An outdoor oven—commonly outdoor brick pizza ovens—often uses wood as fuel, but its primary purpose is to cook food, and you’d rarely just burn wood inside them for warmth or aesthetic reasons.

Depending on who’s doing the estimating, about 22,000 to 25,000 chimney fires happen each year in the United States. Given the fact that millions of Americans have fireplaces (and chimneys), that means chimney fires aren’t exactly common—but they’re not rare, either. Since they’re so dangerous, it’s important to take precautions to prevent them.
