"Bear and his brother Eric, who work for Gary Knight did an exemplary job on our two homes. Their attention to detail, professionalism, and knowledge of the art of painting are unmatched by any competitors I have dealt with with over the years. One home is 112 years old and the other 100 and they both sparkle like the day they were originally built."

"The fix on the skylights looks like it's working. He also did some kind of roof inspection and took care of the problems he photographed. I forgot to ask for a receipt so I will have something for my files. Just in case I need to show what was done on the roof."

"I worked with Saratoga Custom Painting, represented by Andy and his crew, to remedy perhaps the worst paint job on cabinets throughout my house. There was little more than a wash, almost no pigment, and it could not be cleaned; bare wood began to appear less than three years after the house was built. Most paint jobs require a lot of preparation, including masking, disassembling cabinet doors to remove old paint in preparation for new paint, hanging barriers to prevent overspray, and so on. Saratoga spent three of the five days they were in my place just doing prep work. The crew returned with a water-resistance coat of paint for all my cabinets, reinstalled all the doors, and cleaned up behind themselves. It was a pleasure to work with Andy and the Saratoga team."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Satin paint is generally considered a better choice for woodwork—including trim, baseboards, cabinets, and doors—than flatter finishes like eggshell or matte. Its soft sheen enhances architectural details and stands up well to frequent cleaning and daily wear. Compared to eggshell and matte finishes, satin is more durable for high-touch areas because it is less porous and doesn't absorb dirt as easily. Matte finishes, in particular, are prone to scuffs and are harder to clean, making them less practical for surfaces like doors and cabinets.

It’s important to make sure the wood on a new deck is properly seasoned. Seasoning a deck is simple: Once you build it (or have a pro do so), just leave it alone so it can acclimate to the environment. If you don’t give the deck proper seasoning time before staining, the stain can lock in any lingering moisture and cause mold, rot, and other moisture issues down the road. Give the wood at least four to eight weeks to season before you stain.

It’s best to prime composite decking before painting. This promotes better paint adhesion, helps create a smooth finish, and can mean the paint job will last longer. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for application, allow ample primer drying time before painting (typically 24 to 48 hours), and thoroughly clean the deck boards to promote the best adhesion.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

Yes, it is generally a very good idea to seal your deck after pressure washing. Power washing removes not only dirt and debris but also a thin layer of wood, leaving the surface exposed and more susceptible to weathering. Sealing is almost always needed after this process. After a general cleaning, sealing isn't automatically necessary if the existing sealant is still intact. You can test the surface by placing a few drops of water on it. If the water beads up, the sealant is working. If it soaks into the wood, it's time to apply a new sealant. If it has been a few years, it's wise to remove the old sealant, wash the deck, and reseal for maximum protection.
