"I am so thankful for Milton's services, there are not enough words to express my gratitude! This guy has done a tremendous job removing snow working until 9pm in cold weather, digging my car out. A snow plow truck dumped a pile of snow by my car (up to the roof) right after a snow storm; in a few days it became ice. I was devastated seeking help. Milton gave me a fair price compared to all the other estimates from different contractors. He was thorough, attentive to details and all my requests. Very honest and responsible guy. I highly recommend this contractor! I will refer to him in the future if I need some help, whatever his company does. So happy that I found him on Angi."

Holiday Decorating questions, answered by experts

Using a staple gun to hang Christmas lights on your roof or shingles is not recommended. Puncturing your roof with staples can cause damage, leading to cracks, leaks, and exposure to the elements. Staples are also less reliable than other methods like roof clips. For a safer alternative that won't damage your roof, use shingle tabs.

To get in the festive mood, you might turn to hanging holiday lights yourself. In many circumstances, DIY Christmas light installation can be cost-effective, not to mention fun. However, it’s best to consider any limitations to this task and how that might affect your overall project, like tall roofs. Consider hiring a Christmas light installer to place lights or decorations in hard-to-reach areas like roof peaks to avoid the risk of injury.

It’s not a good idea to mix LED and incandescent Christmas lights if you can avoid it. LEDs and incandescents can have significantly different electrical current needs. This difference can lead to a higher risk of problems and failure for both light strands. When possible, switch all your lights over to one kind or the other for the best results. Do not connect the different types of light strings to each other, and avoid linking them to the same circuit.

Heavy amounts of snow could be a problem. In many climates, lots of snow on your rooftop can lead to freeze-thaw cycle that create ice dams, which can damage rooftops. But if you’re using shingle clips, this snow poses an additional problem: As it melts and freezes, it can easily dislodge clips you’ve placed on your roof.

You can clean snow off your roof after a fresh snowfall while it’s still lightweight, but brushing off snow can also dislodge your clips. If you get a lot of snow, then roof clips become less viable.

If you only need strands in safe and easy-to-reach locations and are sure of your electrical system, you can probably purchase and install lights yourself. To do this, carefully test your outlets to ensure there aren’t any sparks or other concerning issues. Your budget might also influence this decision, as going the DIY route can be significantly cheaper.
