"They did a Great job choosing correct sliding door needed. Forwarded the exact sliding screen door info needed so I could order it and when it came in he picked it up and brought to home to install. Also cleaned the area. He got here the day after I was advised the door was ready for pickup. I trusted him right from the outset; very nice very professional I would highly recommend you add them to your contact as your Handiman for your future projects."

"Bill Carr and his son were both excellent handymen. They did multiple projects for us around the house including but not limited to adding shelving, creating a custom area in a giant walk in closet in our beautiful basement, fixing a hinge on an Egyptian trunk, installed 7 new smoke detectors, lubricated our garage door lift, adjusted a kitchen cabinet and more. Bill also did not flake or abandon us like other, more unprofessional handyman companies. We would definitely recommend Bill Carr & Sons to others. He truly is an honest and hard working contractor!"

"Bill Carr and sims has to be one of the best contractors I have ever worked with. Bill and his sons did a beautiful job on our sunroom. They exceeded our expectations. I would rate 5 stars all the way around. We will be using them again. We found our own personal contractors for future work. Thank you Bill . A superb job."

Fire Pit Installation questions, answered by experts

If a storm or other natural disaster occurs in your area, you may not have immediate access to help. According to the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, keep a disaster preparedness kit in your home with enough essentials to sustain your family for at least 72 hours. Put this in an easily accessible location to have it handy in case anything unthinkable happens.

No, it is not safe to use an outlet that sparked. A spark from an outlet could indicate a short circuit, loose or frayed wiring, or other serious damage. Continuing to use an outlet that sparks can increase the risk of electrical shock, electrical fires, and other hazards. It's important to turn off the power to the outlet at the circuit breaker if possible and avoid using the outlet until a licensed electrician has inspected and repaired it.

Ensure you have a safe environment for them to work on, and there aren’t items such as logs, build-up of yard materials, missing or damaged shingles, and weak areas on the roof. Communicate any known electrical issues with contractors at the beginning of the project, and consider hiring an electrician to fix those. Finally, if you are attempting the project yourself, do so when there isn’t any rain, and you can safely get your footing on the roof using proper equipment, such as an extension ladder. Don’t attempt this alone, and have a helper nearby to assist.

Your pilot light needs to be on whenever you’re using your furnace to heat your home. However, you might decide to turn it off during the summer months, when you don’t need heating. Doing this can save you a little bit of money on utility costs—just make sure you’re fine with relighting your pilot light (or hiring a professional to do it) when fall comes around and you’re ready to get cozy.

There are a few things you can look out for to ensure your chimney is safe to use. Check for the following issues:

  • Cracks or missing pieces in the masonry of the chimney

  • Creosote buildup in the chimney, which is a black, tar-like substance

  • Cracks, stains, or scorch marks in the firebox

  • Water stains in or around the fireplace

  • A broken or stuck damper
