"I recently had Best Dressed Electric replace my doorbell chime and fix some lighting issues in my home, and I’m extremely satisfied with the service. "It was done by Mike Stapleford in the time and manner of a professional electrician with 30 years experience. He cleaned up after himself and was very pleasant. His charge was too low, and I increased the payment to amore reasonable amount. The following day, I gave his name and phone number at my company for use for future work there. I highly recommend Stapleford Electric."

"Ken is absolutely the best by far. His work is so clean precise and above standards. From day one he met with my wife and I discussed our project offered advice never pushed anything on us just made suggestions, which we ultimately chose to go with. He sets the bar high for any competition. Pricing was super affordable and he will be our electrician for life. Anyone looking for an electrical contractor look no further Ken is the best of the best."

"William, the owner, his son, as well as another other gentleman and lady on their crew were super courteous and professional from the moment they pulled up to our home! They answered all of our questions and did a superb installation! We have been struck by lightning twice in five weeks and suffered close $15,000 in damages. We simply cannot continue to change our tv’s, a/v equipment and any other electrical component everytime we have a severe thunderstorm-which has been every afternoon for what seems like months. We spoke with other neighbors who’ve already installed lightning rods and none of them have had any other property damage. WB even sunk a third ground rod in because our Lanai screen enclosure had never been grounded. Awesome job, really nice people and hopefully this will do the trick. Bernard B"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

For more complex electrical projects, it’s often most efficient and cost-effective to hire an electrician rather than trying to figure it out yourself (and risking electrical problems). Electricians know exactly what a project requires, and can often find supplies or parts for cheaper than the average homeowner. That can save money compared to going it alone.

In most cases, line wires are located at the bottom of a panel or device, while load wires are located at the top. Line wires are generally black, while load wires are typically red or black. To tell for sure, you can use a multimeter or volt pen to test the wire. A live or line wire will always carry a charge, while a load wire will only carry a charge when it’s in use.

Smart light switches are designed to be compatible with most lights and traditional home wiring, but there are several key factors to check. First, verify your home's wiring, as some smart switches require a neutral wire to operate, which may not be present in older houses (often built before 1985). Always check the wiring requirements for the specific model you choose. Second, consider your light bulbs; while smart switches work with almost any light, using a dimming feature requires dimmable bulbs, such as dimmable LEDs. Finally, ensure you have the necessary network connection. Most smart switches need a Wi-Fi connection for remote control, but some older models might use other standards like ZigBee, which would require a compatible hub.

While most electrical items can be plugged into a GFCI outlet, some appliances with internal or stationary motors, such as refrigerators, vent fans, and fluorescent lighting, can cause nuisance tripping. This happens because they experience a small, normal amount of current leakage, which can cause the GFCI to trip even when the appliance is working correctly. Although this is not a safety hazard, it can be inconvenient and may cause the GFCI outlet to wear out faster. For this reason, it is often better to plug these types of appliances into a standard outlet. Additionally, electrical circuits over 100 feet long can sometimes cause tripping. Some appliances, like hair dryers, have their own built-in GFCI protection, so connecting them to a standard outlet is fine.

There are three main wires on a doorbell, typically color-coded white, black, and green, that are connected to a transformer box in your home. One wire runs to the doorbell button, another wire runs to the door chime, and the third wire runs between the doorbell button and the door chime.
