"We hired Century Masonry & Waterproofing several years ago after suffering through several flooded basements. At a time when some contractors are out there trying to sell unnecessary services and products, Sean is an honest, consultative, helpful professional. He was able to identify problems with our existing sump pit and corrected them. He also identified the fact that the sump pit was not in the lowest point of our foundation and installed a second sump pit and pump there. Thankfully, and knock on wood, we haven't had an issue in years. Thank you Sean and Century Masonry & Waterproofing!"

"The final driveway looks absolutely beautiful and is a huge upgrade for our home. The quality of the masonry and the stone border is top-tier. A slight scheduling delay due to weather/materials, but the team communicated well and made sure the job was finished to perfection once they started.recommended Pro Rise Construction LLC and give them 5?????"

"I used HomeAdvisor to find a licensed professional for my masonry project. Three contractors responded but Grand NJ Construction stood out as superior. Tony promptly traveled quite a distance to look at the job. His quote came in lower than the other two quotes. But it wasn't just the price that was appealing. He had some creative ideas to make my project look cosmetically great. It was a repair job so I wasn't expecting it look like anything special. But in the end, it really did. Tony made an effort to ensure the project was beautiful, secure and that my property was spotless upon completion."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Mortar, or masonry mortar, is mainly used in joints and as parging for stone, brick, or cement construction. Stucco is primarily a surface material used as wall coverings. For maintenance, masonry will need repointing or replacing as damage or land shifting occurs, whereas stucco will need patching or refinishing as it tends to crack over time along with other types of wear-and-tear.

Yes, brick houses are better insulated, because the bricks slow down the passage of air from the outside to the inside and vice-versa. This helps to stabilize the internal temperature of the home. When combined with proper residential insulation, brick houses are more efficient and better insulated than other types.

The best way to clean creosote from brick is to hire a professional chimney sweep. However, you can use a creosote log to remove excess buildup between cleanings. You can also clean minor creosote buildup using dish soap or vinegar mixed with water.

Some older brick material is extremely hard, making it tough to create a hole. Rather than using a typical wood drill bit, always use a masonry drill bit when drilling into brick. For extremely hard brick, using a power drill with a hammer function may give you better results. The drill bit will heat up as it goes into the extremely hard brick, so you may need to stop after a few minutes and allow the bit to cool before starting to drill again.

When it comes to how to paint a brick chimney, consider that standard paint can seal in moisture and cause serious chimney problems. Instead, use a vapor-permeable sealant. You’ll first scrub and sand the chimney; then, you can patch any gaps with caulk and apply the sealant. We recommend hiring a pro for this job since it entails working on the roof, which comes with a lot of necessary safety precautions.
