"Working with Smith Power Group, Inc. was a very rewarding and mutually beneficial experience. The owner, Carlton, sat with us and explained the entire process and answered all of our questions. The office kept us informed concerning the necessary paperwork, permits, etc. On the day of installation the crew arrived on time and proceeded to install our generator without issues. We highly recommend SPG."

"Ken is the best. I definitely now consider him my electrician. I would not dream of using anyone else. He drove an hour to me on a weekend at Christmas when I had no heat and hot water. Do I really need to say any more than that?"

"I had a recommended friend of a friend come in and look at my problem and he alerted me that I will have to re-wire the entire left side of my home. Seemed a little sketchy and I need a second opinion. I called service majic like I have many times before and Ryan from PDQ called me on a Sunday night 3 minutes after sending the request. He was ready for any size job and showed up a day later. He quickly checked out our outlets affected and 2 hours later he was done with the job and everything is working perfectly. He did not have to re-wire the enitire side of the house and we paid $200 instead of $600 and we had a great conversation. Thanks!"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

Portable generators provide backup power for essential appliances during outages and are easy to relocate.

Whole-house generators need to be installed on level ground several feet away from walls and other objects. Because they tap into the electrical system directly, they usually need to be close to your home electrical panel for a transfer switch installation. It also helps with installation if they are near to a gas line or propane tank installation.

Generators run on a variety of fuel types, ranging from natural gas to solar power. Keep in mind that fuel costs varying by type:

  • Natural gas: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Liquid propane: $2,000–$21,000 per year

  • Diesel: $3,000–$20,000 per year

  • Gasoline: $500–$3,000 per year

  • Solar generator: $2,000–$25,000 per unit

  • Battery backup: $10,000–$25,000 per unit

Here’s what you can run with different wattages and types of generators:

Portable generator:

  • 2,000 watts can handle a large appliance like a freezer or refrigerator, plus a few smaller items like phones or computer chargers.

  • 4,000 watts will keep two large appliances operating and a few smaller devices.

  • 8,000 watts should power most essential appliances and other devices, including a sump pump, well pump, or your dishwasher.

Partial to whole-house generator:

  • 20,000 watts and above will make it seem like your home’s power is still on.

As a safety measure, you should always turn off the main breaker while operating your generator’s backup breaker. In addition, you should also switch off all appliance breakers so you don't have a power surge when the main breaker turns back on. And finally, turning off the main breaker prevents back-feeding, which endangers utility workers with the risk of electrocution. Back-feeding could also destroy the electrical circuits of your neighbors if they use the same power network.
