When we started asking questions about what exactly to select at the store, it became clear that the problem with the lights wasn't as simple as it appeared. We had been using the incorrect bulbs. We didn't get a straightforward answer after that - did the ballasts go bad because we had used the wrong bulbs? Did the bulbs go bad because we were putting them into a failing fixture? Were our fixtures all fine (maybe the bulbs went bad just because they were the wrong type)? Would everything work fine if we just put in the right bulbs? Which bulbs were the right ones and which were the wrong ones? The tech also explained that technology had evolved; he suggested getting more modern fixtures instead of trying to buy exact replacements... but in his explanation, he got his terminology backwards (what he said was old and obsolete was actually the newer technology, and vice versa). I had to drive to the hardware store for an exchange after Google searches confirmed that he had given us the wrong recommendation.
Several weeks after that May 30th visit, I still hadn't had time to buy the new hardware and so I hadn't called Sovereign back for an installation appointment. When I received a $214 bill in the mail for the May 30th service call, I called the office to question it. After some back and forth, they agreed to cancel that bill when I paid for the completed work. They sent the bill because they thought I would schedule the installation promptly and I didn't do that. This conversation was uncomfortable, and it didn't have to be. I wish Sovereign would have been more clear about their expectations - if I had known their timeline didn't match mine, I would have scheduled the whole thing differently. They don't seem to have an organized approach to charge for estimates (or a and quot;diagnosis feeand quot;) and then forgiving that fee when the repair is done. I share the blame though - I didn't ask the questions. I also didn't ask the tech to estimate the installation charges, so when the work was done a few weeks later, the amount was a surprise.
Anyway, I bought a new fan and some LED light fixtures (after an exchange at the hardware store) and called Sovereign around the end of June to schedule the installation. We agreed on July 7th, and Tsigi spent the morning doing the work. He had a hard time finding our house because the office had listed my address in the wrong township, but he did a good job of keeping us informed of his expected arrival time. He encountered one problem with the lights -- the previous homeowner had modified the fixtures to make two fixtures run off of one electrical box. Tsigi explained our options very clearly: add an extra box (= extra time and cost!) or settle for one fixture instead of two. We decided to settle for one fixture where there had previously been two. That decision meant that we now have several holes in our ceiling that aren't covered up anymore by the light fixtures... we'll have to fix those ourselves later.
The rest of the job (two of the light fixtures and a ceiling fan) went smoothly. Tsigi cleaned up well, offered to haul away the old hardware if we wanted, and left me with a good impression of Sovereign Electric.
After that, we decided to get the timers installed. The workers showed up on time and were very professional. They weren't programmed quite right the first time and so Mark himself came out and got everything in working order the next day.
Had some minor details that needed to be worked out after inspection, that the tech who did the job very much apologized for missing and they were out immediately following notification and Mark made sure the job was rectified and went the extra mi,e to apologize and make sure we were happy with the experience. Would have given all A's if the minor details mentioned had not occurred but would have no problem recommending him for work again.
