Customers say: Quick response

"Al was friendly, knowledgable, and ensured the floors were completed to our satisfaction. What I loved was didn't need to worry about anything. They came, moved out furniture, ripped and hauled away our old floors, did the install, cleaned up, and moved our furniture back. The floors came out beautiful. I highly recommend him and his business."

Customers say: Quality work

"Everything went very smoothly. Rich worked with us to find a pre-finished hardwood floor that came close to the one he had put down for us approximately 10 years ago. Using the pre-finished floor cut down a lot of dust and cleanup. The hardwood was delivered as scheduled and the prep of the floor and stairs along with the laying of the hardwood surfaces was completed in one day. Another couple of days were required to stain and put the final coats of finish on the stairs. All was done on schedule. Everything looks great. The price came as estimated."

"They did an excellent job in removing very old carpet and refinishing the wood floor exposed. Alberto walked me through the whole process and discussed the small repairs. He really worked with me on the pricing for the additional work that needed to be done. Floor is absolutely beautiful."

"I cannot recommend Erik and A-1 Flooring enough for their outstanding work. Over the past 8 years, they've transformed the hardwood floors in three of my houses, and each time, the results have been nothing short of phenomenal. What truly sets them apart is their ability to breathe new life into old floors. The 110-year-old floors in my current home now look as if they were just installed yesterday. Erik is knowledgeable, responsive, and accommodating making the entire process an absolute pleasure. Look no further!"

"Hired them based on recommendations and reviews. Their price was competitive. The job was a new hardwood floor in the kitchen, and repairs and sanding/refinishing living room/dining room. Give them a B for quality. It's mostly fine, but one area they said would sand out still shows some damage. Also the color, which to be fair, they said wouldn't be exactly the same as adjacent floors that were not redone, is actually fairly different. My issue with them is communication. They fell short in a few areas. Background: I work 5 minutes from my house, so I told them to call when they're on the way/ready to leave and I'd let them in/out. Out of the four visits, they only did this once or twice. The rest of the time, they'd call once they were there and have to wait for me. The first day, they left without calling and left my front and back doors unlocked. The foreman said "We usually have a lock box." This was never discussed before and I was frankly uncomfortable, as there were different workers there every day. I was told a couple of times that we could move back in a few hours after they finished, but when they actually finished, we were told to wait until the next day. So I said I wouldn't recommend them, but actually I'm not sure. I spent $3800 in this job."

Flooring Installation questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can put carpet directly on concrete. However, you need to take certain precautions to ensure the success of the carpet installation. For example, you’ll need to choose a synthetic carpet pad to provide insulation and cushioning and a vapor barrier to prevent moisture from seeping into the carpet.

The flooring that is the least toxic is solid wood. Natural linoleum, tile, stone, bamboo, and cork flooring also make the list of least-toxic flooring types. These flooring materials are safer and healthier for your home because they are natural materials that aren’t manufactured with chemicals, unlike laminate flooring. While some laminate flooring brands are made with less formaldehyde, many contain high levels of toxic chemicals that can off-gas in your home for months and years after installation.

Choosing natural flooring materials that are easy to clean without chemical cleansers can also help keep your home safer.

Stain-resistant carpet might be worth it for your household if you have children or pets and expect spills to happen. While it may cost more than you expected upfront, you may save money in the long run if you have to replace your carpet less frequently (thanks to stains not absorbing down into the fibers).

In addition to local hardware stores, many big-box chains and national equipment rental companies carry floor sanders for rent. Additionally, U-Sand, manufacturers of a random orbital floor sander, operate a rental program in partnership with a number of different regional chains and local outlets. Make sure to thoroughly compare the prices at all the stores nearest you—while the costs average out to a similar range across dealerships, some of them offer significantly better rates for long-term rentals than others.

Transition strips are often called seam binders as they bridge the gap between two floor types. They are common between carpeting and hardwood or wood and tile. Transition strips prevent trips and falls and make the transition from each room appear seamless. They are also often used to even out height differences between floors.
