From the first time I called for an estimate to the completion of the work, Tony and his workers were completely professional and trustworthy. We had a new liner installed in our chimney and after inspecting the exterior chimney, Tony immediately identified damage that had occurred from years of weather and use. Tony provided several repair options with varying prices, however ultimately recommended the most cost effective and common sense solution and not once pushed for the more expensive repair. "Our chimney had been partially toppled (about 4-5 rows of bricks were knocked off or knocked askew) by a shade tree's branch in a heavy storm. I called Bob since he was a local provider, and even though I called on a weekend, he came out quickly the next day to look at the damage. He called me back (after making his initial inspection, during which I wasn't home) with an estimate of $830 to repair the chimney, add a stainless steel cap and crown, and cut the tree's branch back so that it wouldn't do any further damage. He told me that wouldn't be doing the work himself; that he's too old for rooftop work anymore, but that he has a long-trusted employee to take care of it. He also warned me that while they always try to maintain the appearance of the chimney, many of the bricks had been knocked off and might have to be replaced. I didn't get any competitive bids, so I don't know how his price compares, but it seemed fair to me. So, I gave him the go-ahead (along with a $100 deposit) and we set a tentative date of March 30, weather permitting. Of course, on March 30 it rained all day. The next day, though it was sunny and Bob's guy was there from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. He replaced and mortared all the bricks, taking the time to scour the yard for all of the errant pieces. It turns out, he was able to find all of them, and it looks to me like they all went back exactly as they were. He also trimmed the tree and installed the cap and crown, and everything looks great. It was a truly painless process, and a welcome resolution to a potentially costly (and dangerous) problem. I'm happy to have found Bob and Alpine, and would gladly contact them again for any related needs in the future. I understand Bob installs and services fireplaces and BBQs as well, although I'll have to wait for our house to stop having costly accidents before I call him for those kinds of luxuries!"

"That was fine. That was a year ago. It was good. I end up spending $500. I wasn't expecting to spend that much, because they did a bunch of other things. I wasn't even there when they came. I was only expecting to get my chimneys cleaned and then they recommended I get the caps and spent more and I guess I needed the chimney caps, as well."

I called for an estimate and made an appointment for 9:00 am on Saturday, Nov. 15.  John showed up about 8:15 with his 2 young workers who checked the chimney in the basement and then went on the roof.  The chimney had some missing bricks but other than that, needed nothing... the liner was in fine condition.  John told me they could do the job immediately for $785.  I said, how about $750 and he said ok.  They were there for about 40 minutes, re-cemented the missing bricks and put stucco all the way around the chimney. 

I made a check out to John Christman Chimney Repair but was told I had to make it out to him directly so I had to rip up the check and make out a new one. 

I really had only wanted an estimate since I had no idea if that was a fair price but felt I was caught off-guard and agreed to have him do the job.  After he left I decided that the price seemed very high for the amount of work that was done.  I tried to stop payment on the check but it was cashed IMMEDIATELY.  The next day I called a few other chimney repair places and they told me that the price seemed high for the amount of work that was done.

I suppose the lesson learned here is ALWAYS get at least 2-3 estimates before committing to having the work done.
