"They were very busy when I contacted them but were able to get a surveyor out the following week. He was very kind and thorough. The surveys they provided were detailed and it was convenient having the multiple copies. When my neighbor disputed the finding of the survey, Danny spoked to him and explained their process, which I appreciated. I am still waiting for the corner markers to be put in but I understand they are really busy."

"My husband and I were looking to improve the landscaping in our backyard and envisioned adding a stone patio and an in ground pool. A close friend recommended Elwell Studio Landscape Architecture after they had used the firm to design an outdoor kitchen/fire pit area enhancing their existing pool and patio.  Our first interaction with Jason Elwell (owner) over the phone gave us a comforting feeling that we didn’t have to stress over the details. Jason worked closely with us, taking the time to understand our style, how we planned to utilize our outdoor spaces, and our budget. He walked us through a very clear process from concepts to final construction documents and installation. Jason presented exceptionally clear and thorough 3-D design drawings that really helped us understand his vision. He was very open to listening to us and applying our ideas very creatively into the design. He was very creative with utilizing as much of our existing landscape as possible, working the new design in seamlessly. Jason worked to ensure we were on track to have the project we dreamed of constructed, adjusting the design and cost estimates as the design evolved. He worked with us through the selection of materials, explaining benefits and price points. Jason provided guidance through construction, ensuring our new pool and landscape were built to his stringent standards. Elwell Studio worked efficiently with our township through the entire approval process and assembled a construction team that built our project exactly as presented to us and within budget. We love our new backyard!"

Land Surveying questions, answered by experts

To hire a land surveyor, you need to start by searching online for reputable professionals in your area. Here are a few steps to take when making a shortlist:

  • Browse land surveyor service website

  • Check credentials

  • Read customer reviews

  • Find their contact information

  • Call or email to inquire about more information

  • Ask how far they travel, if you’re some distance away

  • Find out how they charge for their services

  • Ask about schedule and turnaround times

  • Repeat these steps for one to two other services and compare pricing

This is fairly rare, but sometimes the local government or a group like a historical society will label a tree as a landmark, or historical item. These designations almost always come with a small, on-site plaque for identification, but you should also be able to look up protected trees in your area on a city website or similar list. If the tree in question is a landmark, call your local government and ask how to proceed before making any plans.

If a buyer pays for a survey, the surveyor they hired will only provide results to them. It’s up to the buyer whether they share the survey results with the seller or not, even if they ultimately walk away from the deal. It’s considered good faith to share the results with the seller, though, especially if you back out of the deal, as the seller can then provide that survey to future interested parties.

When considering the price of drilling a well, factor in how much you’ll save in water costs per year. The average family of four uses 100 gallons of water per person per day in the U.S. With a private water well, you can save hundreds each year.

Wells are also environmentally friendly. You don’t need to worry about drinking water treated with chemicals. Talk to at least three well pump contractors in your area. They’ll be able to tell you more about your options, give you different quotes, and discuss the biggest concerns.

ALTA/ACSM surveys are the most comprehensive type of land survey and, as such, tend to be the most expensive. These surveys have standardized guidelines and reports and are used in many kinds of real estate transactions to ensure consistent and accurate information is available for properties.
