"As a single, female homeowner I rely heavily on customer reviews when it comes to selecting contractors for home repairs. Therefore, I take submitting my reviews seriously and am always completely candid. With that said, I am submitting this review to express my satisfaction with the chimney cleaning and chimney liner replacement performed by Daren of Gallo's Chimney Sweep. Daren (and his brother-in-law, whose name escapes me) were both extremely professional and personable. Daren provided pictures of my chimney, which clearly showed I had a problem. He patiently explained in detail (including the required materials) what should be done to rectify the problem. There were no 'hard sale tactics' nor any pressure to sign a contract. After making a few calls and conducting my own research on the Internet I discovered his quote was very reasonable. We agreed on a date/time and he arrived as scheduled. They reviewed completed stages with me throughout the project to make sure I understood what they were doing and why. Once the job was complete, they cleaned up all the debris. Gallo’s Chimney Sweep checked all the boxes: Prompt, Professional, Dependable, Lifetime Guarantee, Reasonable Pricing, and Immaculate Clean-up. I highly recommend Gallo's for your chimney repairs and maintenance."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Single-pane windows might let in the cold, but if you’re not ready for a long-term solution or window replacement, there are quick fixes to keep your space warmer. Start by sealing gaps with weatherstripping or caulking around the frame to block drafts. For an extra barrier, apply window insulation film to the glass, trapping an air pocket between the film and the window. Thick curtains or thermal drapes can also help keep the chill at bay. And if you’re in a pinch and looking to get creative, bubble wrap can provide a surprisingly effective layer of insulation—just spritz the window with water and press it on, bubble side in.

They provide an affordable, easy-to-install alternative to masonry fireplaces with efficient heating options.

The best style of chimney cap for a brick chimney is one that fits tightly around the brick top of the chimney. The cap should have a screen to fully enclose it to keep animals out. The best materials include stainless steel, copper, or aluminum that fit tightly or are custom fabricated for a perfect fit on your chimney.

Compared to certain types of firewood like pine or spruce—which burn off sticky resin contained within the wood that creates lots of smoke—elm isn’t the worst option for burning in a fireplace.

Because elm wood is dense, it burns at a moderate pace and does a pretty good job of keeping your home warm. Hardwood like maple or oak may perform slightly better, but elm isn’t a bad choice overall.

The cost to rebuild a fireplace varies dramatically depending on what you want to do and the type of fireplace you are rebuilding. A simple electric fireplace can be replaced with ease and at a low cost. On the other end of the spectrum, a wood-burning fireplace could cost well into the tens of thousands. The good news is functioning fireplaces increase your home’s value and are generally a good investment.
