"Ray came on time. He repaired my gutter, pointed two chimnies and sealed my skylight with tar. He took photos before and showed us what was wrong. After he completed the jobs, he took photos and showed us the finished job. Ray cleaned up and was courteous and respectful. Would recommend him highly."

"This was a very involved plaster repair and remediation job, in a very old house. Grady is the only person (or company) who was willing to take on the job and drive all the way from Pennsylvania to our home in Northern Virginia. There are very few people who do this kind of work anymore (we really searched) and he is an expert in his field. We needed to work around his schedule, because he is in demand in the tri-state area, so it took awhile to schedule the work to begin... but it was worth it."

"I would highly recommend slats & pleats! We had shutters installed and their work is absolutely stunning! Paul is the nicest guy who is very knowledgeable, professional, and fairly priced --the workers are great too! I can't wait to have them put shutters on the rest of my windows! Highly recommend! Thank you Paul!"

"I would give Denis N number if stars if I had an option to do so. He was very professional, polite and punctual. Besides the job I hired him for, he also took care of many other small fixes for a very reasonable price. Honestly I was not sure how the experience will be when I hired him only because he is new to Angie’s and not lot of reviews. He may be new on Angie’s but he knows what he is doing. Extremely happy with his work and he is going to be “my go to person” for many more years .. thanks Denis!!"

Window Shutter Repair questions, answered by experts

Wood is the most classic shutter material. Common options include pine, cedar, or brasswood. MDF shutters are also a more affordable option that retains the timeless, classic look. Composite shutters, mainly vinyl and aluminum shutters, have also become more popular over the years. You may also find steel shutters, sometimes referred to as security shutters, used on the exterior. Shutters also come in various colors and finishes, adding another layer of design flexibility.

Shutters are still very common in Southern, farmhouse, and traditional-style homes, especially those in warm climates who can benefit from the increased efficiency. While modern homes and designs tend to shy away from shutters, shutters are a timeless design style that will likely be around for decades to come.

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.
