Well pumps need power to run, so they can’t function without electricity. If your power shuts off, there can sometimes be enough pressure in the water tank to allow for a lucky flush or a bit of tap water—but this won’t last long. A larger well pressure tank won’t improve water pressure on its own. However, bigger tanks don’t have to cycle as often as smaller ones, which reduces the amount of stress on your well system. As a result, a bigger tank can last longer and might experience fewer well pump issues that could impact your water pressure.

When testing the pressure of your well tank, the psi should be two below the cut-on pressure. For example, if your tank is set to 40/60, then your pressure should be at 38 psi.

There are a few warning signs that can indicate your well pump is in decline. If you notice changes in your water pressure, a jump in your utility bill, taps that spit water, or unusual sounds coming from your well system, it’s a good idea to call in a well pump professional to give your system a check-up.

The average three to four-bedroom home uses a well pump of 8 to 12 GPM. It’s recommended to calculate your own GPM based on the number of water fixtures in your home so you can find the pump size that’s most accurate to your needs.
