"I was seeking a qualified contractor for a project at my residence. I contacted Angie’s List for recommendations and was promptly connected with Leo, owner of M&L Company. After our initial conversation, we scheduled a meeting for a project estimate. Although the original agreed-upon date was postponed by the contractor, we rescheduled and his team subsequently began work. During the course of the project, I observed that proper precautions were not taken to protect my property. Dirt was deposited in front of my home, and a tractor was used to transport soil from the front to the backyard, resulting in significant damage to my front lawn. While the backyard was levelled to my satisfaction, there were minor issues with the completed work. Leo and I agreed that he would return to address the damage to the front lawn. Instead of repairing the lawn as discussed, Leo advised me to purchase grass seed and water the affected area myself, suggesting that improvement would take several months. Despite following his instructions, there has been little improvement to the front lawn. On May 20, 2025, I contacted Leo again to request that he inspect the ongoing damage and propose a solution. He assured me he would visit the property, but he has not followed through or communicated further regarding this matter."

Meanwhile they are sending me a bill for the service they performed. I told them I would not pay it until the lawn was fixed. 10 weeks after they have not fixed my lawn and it is a complete mess. Buying plants from a nursery is one thing, but ensuring that they are properly planted is another. While you might not need to hire a landscaper for every plant that you buy from a nursery, it’s a great idea to have their expertise and experience to plant larger items, like burlapped trees or specialty plants like rose bushes. Even better, before making a trip to a nursery to buy new plants, consult a local landscaper to test your soil for pH levels, soil texture, and phosphorus and potassium levels to help determine the best plants for your area.
Garden nurseries offer many plants to make your home and garden flourish. In-container plants are one option, including perennials, annuals, and small shrubs or trees. Large hedge plants and roses are called bare-root plants, meaning they have not been potted. Finally, you will see some burlapped plants, typically larger trees and shrubs with burlap wrapping around the bottom.
The best time to plant is between spring and autumn. Springtime weather is typically mild and is when nurseries start to bloom. When the summer weather arrives and it’s hot out, it’s best to avoid planting bare-root plants, but you can still plant many in-container varieties. The first sign of fall is another great opportunity to plant biennials if you live in southern states, or a lovely vegetable garden up north.
If you’re hiring a landscaper to plant the garden of your dreams, you do not need to provide them with plants that you bought yourself from a nursery. While you certainly can provide your landscaper with plants, keep in mind that some nurseries provide discounts to landscaping companies, therefore potentially lowering your materials cost. Beyond the cost of the plants themselves, you need to have additional materials like topsoil and mulch for the project. Most likely, your landscaper can get a discount on these materials as well, so it’s worth speaking with them before making any large purchases.
