"We found Antonelly Pro Painters on Angi and we are thrilled with the job they did on our bedroom. Alex has been great about communicating and Anderson did a fantastic job painting. The price was very reasonable and we already have them scheduled to paint our living room, kitchen and breakfast nook. We would refer them to anyone that is looking for a very responsive painter who does a great job."

"We were very pleased with Northern Ridge Painting & Remodeling and highly recommend them. We needed the outside trim of our house painted along with the shutters. Also the front door needed to be sanded, stained and re sealed. In addition we had areas of our trim removed and replaced/painted. Our home is large and it goes up quite high. Brian's team was very responsive from our first inquiry to his quick estimate. Their communication was spot on and they answered all our questions throughout the process. The whole crew was wonderful during the entire experience and cleaned up every day. The job was done in a timely manner and the work was excellent. There was a thorough walk around before the final payment to make sure everything was done properly and to our satisfaction. I would mot hesitate to call on Northern Ridge in the future."

Painting questions, answered by experts

Typically, a fence requires one to two coats of stain. The exact number can vary depending on the porosity of the wood. For specific guidance, it's best to check the manufacturer's instructions. After applying the first coat and letting it dry completely, you can assess the finish. If it appears patchy, uneven, or you want a more saturated color, a second coat is recommended. An extra coat can also help cover lap marks.

You can weather a new wood fence by applying vinegar with steel wool as a way to fade some of the coloring. You may also find it easier to stain your entire fence a new color instead of trying to get newer fence boards to match an older one.

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

The general consensus is that two coats of stain are required and since the cedar is siding, a third coat of sealant is always a good idea. This helps protect the wood and stain, so you won’t need to resand and restain for at least a decade. Each stain after the first will darken the wood, so be aware of that when choosing a colored stain.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.
