"Let me begin by saying that I had been a Stafford customer for 25 years, for my second home in NH as well as for 4 rentals there. I would have thought that this long standing relationship would have gotten me some consideration from them but it has not. Here is what happened: When the tech arrived at my home on Dec. 31, 2019 to perform furnace cleaning (he let himself in using key code as I do not live there full time) he discovered the pressure relief valve was spraying 180 degree hot steamy water on the entire basement including the finished/furnished part of basement including half bath. He spent 2 1/2 hours there, in apparently standing water, replaced a bunch of parts, and told NO ONE about the water event that was occurring. It was a full month (Jan. 25, 2020) before I was able to get to the house due to an injury, and what I discovered was the entire basement covered in black mold! When I called the Stafford office the next business day and asked if tech had noticed anything odd in the basement(At that point I had no idea what had happened as all signs of water was gone with only mold remaining) the service Mgr called me back and told me what the tech had discovered on the cleaning date, last Dec 31. I said "and he didn't tell anyone?!" and the service Mgr said "That's what I said"! While an old or faulty part might have caused the pressure relief valve to go,any damage from the water event could have immediately been alleviated by a company like servpro as I have used them for an incident elsewhere where pipes had burst. They prevented mold from happening in that instance. In this case, the negligence on the part of Stafford's tech to bring this catastrophic event to anyone's attention caused me to instead have to hire a mold company to completely demolish the basement to the foundation walls. While my ins. co. paid a lump sum to get rid of the mold (it cost me more than what my ins. do. paid for mold removal) almost a year later I am still left holding the bag trying to get some financial compensation fromStafford's ins. carrier to rebuild the finished room and to replace lost personal belongings, because of their employee's negligence. All I have so far are lawyers fees (I had to hire an attorney),and a run around from their ins adjuster. If the tech had walked in and had smelled gas, for instance, would he not have told anyone? His superiors?."

Heating Oil questions, answered by experts

A geothermal heat pump system will take about 10 years to pay for itself, and it has a life span of anywhere from about 25 to 50 years. Installing a geothermal heat pump will cost about $14,250 upfront, but it can reduce your energy bills by around 65% when compared to a conventional HVAC system.

Most maintenance checks take 2-5 hours, though extensive repairs may take longer.

Service costs range from $200 to $1,500, depending on maintenance needs, system age, and labor.

The most obvious downside is the high upfront cost of buying and installing one of these systems. Additionally, sometimes the system can take a longer time to heat than alternatives like a boiler. Also, if something goes wrong with the geothermal pump, repairs are often significantly more expensive than repairing traditional, above-ground heat pumps.

If a geothermal heat pump is installed correctly, then you shouldn’t have to worry about having a backup heat source such as a furnace or oil boiler. However, there are geothermal systems installed that include a backup in case the heat pump fails due to extreme cold. This is simply a backup heat pump you’ll likely never need and not an alternative heat source.
