"I called Smith Family Tree Service at the advice of a certified arborist. They were able to schedule a meeting for a quote for trimming 2 trees and 1 tree removed including the stump. They suggested holding off trimming one of the trees until spring, but we scheduled the other services. They arrived promptly and went to work. They did a fantastic job with the tree /stump removal and the trimming of a large tree that we share with a neighbor. Both my neighbor and I could not be happier with the jib they did. I would definitely recommend them and hire them again myself."

"Eric was professional, courteous, punctual and extremely knowledgeable/passionate about his work. Iâ m so happy I found him and didnâ t hire anyone else. The tree I had cut actually belongs to my neighbor but had become a problem since Iâ ve moved in. The tree is gigantic and hangs over my deck and yard, allowing birds to poo on everything. After speaking with my neighbor and getting the green light to cut anything off that I wanted to, Eric gave an amazing quote, we set a date and he even called to say he could come a few days early! He did such a great job cleaning up the tree, cleaning up everything he cut down and he was awesome with my nosey dogs! Thanks again!! I will definitely be using Young Tree Experts again!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Absolutely. These steps are significantly easier, too, especially when it comes to preserving the root ball and moving the palm tree. However, you will want to make sure the tree has plenty of fertilizer to establish itself and start growing. Supports may also be more important, as it can take extra time for a potted palm to spread out its roots. If you are transferring a palm to another pot, you’ll want to move up a size or two to a larger pot. Make sure the pot has excellent drainage to keep the palm from getting waterlogged.

It is possible to cut down a tree on your property yourself, but it is generally not recommended unless specific conditions are met. You should only consider this project if the tree is small (e.g., under 4-5 inches in diameter and short enough that you don't need a ladder to reach the branches), and you are experienced in handling a chainsaw. The tree must also be located far from any power lines, fences, homes, or other structures. Even for small trees, the work can be dangerous, and it's always advisable to have a spotter to ensure the tree falls correctly and no branches fall on you.

For any tree that is large, requires a ladder to access, or is near electrical lines or structures, you should always hire a professional. Attempting to remove a large tree yourself is extremely dangerous, poses a risk of serious injury, and could result in significant damage to your property.

Before any tree removal, it's also important to check your local and state regulations to ensure the tree is not historic or otherwise protected by your city.

Generally, no, tree topping isn’t a good technique, and you should avoid using it in most cases. Tree topping may be the only good option to save a tree following severe damage after a storm, but in most other cases, it’s not the right choice. Tree topping can leave trees vulnerable to disease and further damage, and most pros will suggest against it.

It’s not always easy to tell when a tree is dying, although signs like dropping branches and brittle bark can sometimes offer clues. It can also be difficult to know whether a tree is dead or dormant, especially if it’s a deciduous tree. You’ll want to wait until a growth season to get a good idea of a tree’s health. When in doubt, contact an arborist for a consultation.

Deciduous shade trees (the type of trees whose leaves fall off in autumn) need to be pruned in late winter—between February and March. That’s because it’s easier to find and remove sick or dead branches when no leaves are present. And wounds close and heal faster in colder temperatures so pruning them at this time also makes them less prone to infection.
